Buy a replacement gear set for the window motor.

They have plastic gears with 3 little plastic isolators that are designed to give a bit.  Over time they disintegrate and then the gears fail to engage.

You can buy the kit from just about any parts place.

The motor is held in place by 3 bolts, which you access with the door panel off.  If the motor has never been messed with you will need to drill 3 hole (about 1/2") to access the bolts.  There are dimples in the door frame to mark the locations.  Pull the motor out, open the gear section, replace bad parts, reinstall.

(PDF file warning) You'll need HELP! part number 74410 Window regulator gear plugs on this page - http://www.dormanproducts.com/catalog/motormite/165-170_W_Part2.pdf#Page=5 - which are the isolators Chuck refers to. The gear may be ok but it's on that page too, not sure which one though.

My driver side motor also had some rust inside that needed cleaning out... putting those brushes back in place is a pain though so don't take it apart unless you really have to.
