AOD Kickdown Cable question

I was just wondering how do you adjust the kick down cable on my 86 Cougar 5.0 with aod.  From what i gather if i tighten the cable it will shift harder, and later.  and should also preserve clutch life.  Question is what is the process in tighting that cable?

Proper adjustment requires a guage block and a pressure guage. You could get close with hitting overdrive under light throttle at about 40-45 mph.
Throttle pressure fights against governor pressure to make the shifts so the 40 mph range on overdrive will get you close.make it closer to 45 and the unit will live longer but shift firmer.

Isn't this the opposite of true? More pressure will produce an earlier shift. At least I believe that's what it did when I had the AOD.

well i got it to where 1-2 shift and 2-3 shift have a decent quick snap for a shift and 3-od is pretty decent too... also figured out i have a tab type adjuster instead of that block type

Yeah, moving the cable just 1/8" helped improve my shift quality greatly. My 4r70w on the other hand, it has incredibly high pressure and is annoying at no/light throttle. For some reason, lower pressures make it act weird when warm while higher pressures make it act weird when cold. It warms up quickly so I've stuck with the higher pressure. The 2-1 downshift when coming to a stop isn't pleasant though...feels like I'm being lightly bumped by the car behind me :wtf:

Needless to say, I'll be messing with the transmission some more soon. I miss the ease of use with the AOD and not sure why everyone is so quick to judge them, especially as long as the fluid is kept cool, clean, and pressure remains strong.

Didn't notice you were nearby :p

I haven't really touched it since last fall. I haven't even taken the time to wire up my wideband sensor although it's dangling down there...it's time to replace the rearend, brakes, and all suspension though. Then learn how to reupholster ;)
