Oh AOD how I hate thee... Reply #30 – March 24, 2009, 08:56:25 PM I can believe ~AC ran an AOD dry and refilled it and it kept going. Automatic transmissions are hydraulic pumps, not engines. An engine will continue running with no oil until it tears itself apart. An automatic tranny will only work until the fluid is gone, then it's in neutral. No fluid at all isn't as bad as low fluid, because no fluid at all will simply result in the clutches not engaging at all (you will experience brief slipping as the tranny pukes itself dry). Low fluid (or low fluid pressure) will result in them engaging, but not tight enough to hold. It's the slipping that kills automatic trannies. That being said, I wouldn't recommend doing it on purpose, of course. I ran the C5 in my '85 V6 T-Bird dry after blowing the 0-ring at the cooler line fitting. I noticed the tranny slipping like hell while driving home. By the time I got home the tranny had no go at all, I literally had to coast down the road and use my momentum to get into the driveway. I jacked the car up, dropped the pan, nearly puked at the burned fluid smell, spent half a day trying to find out what that white "bobber" that was in the pan was, figured out it was not needed, sed the tar that was previously tranny fluid out of the pan, reinstalled it (didn't even change the filter, I thought the tranny was screwed anyway), filled it with fluid, and drove it for two more years. I traded it in on the '91, then came across it again several years later for sale. The guy had swapped a 302 in, but that old C5 was still plugging along. Quote Selected

Just wait till someone plays the "prank" on you. you can reach those fittings on the transmission by just reaching under the car. and that's exactly what someone did b/c i think it's 100% improbable that both fittings would blow at once without driving the car hard at allWell sorry you had a problem, but would have been nice IF you'd mentioned it was vandalism instead of posting as if you were in a drunken stupor...My car stays in the garage, I catch anybody in there, they'll come out in a body bag... You should have mentioned someone else messed with your ride. Instead you created the misconception that you were the one that did it, thus making us believe the "Lights are on but nobody's home". Oh AOD how I hate thee... Reply #33 – March 25, 2009, 10:49:24 AM heh sorry, i forget sarcasm cant really be "heard" when youre only typing it. i figured since it was so stupid of an "idea" that people would catch on that i was joking. i didnt just blow an o ring or anything, when i got the car home, after coasting in and having 3 other guys help me push the thing in to my apt complex i got under there and the hydrolic coolant lines were actually hanging under the car. they were pulled clean out of the transmission. and when i say "prank" i am giving who ever did it the benefit of the doubt they didnt cause catastrophic failure on purpose. maybe im a bad at judging people's character. i dont know who did it, and i wouldnt consider them friends. infact i would prolly beat the out of them if i knew who it was. but yeh like i said, i figured it sounded so stupid as a thing to do that it would have been obvious that i was joking... i almost wish it wasnt so easy to get to those lines, and if i had the resources, i'd build a diamond plate shield to keep someone from reaching under there and doing it again. Oh AOD how I hate thee... Reply #34 – March 25, 2009, 11:18:30 AM I think you need a new group of friends. Might just solve your problem. Sounds to me like you pissed off the wrong person. Quote Selected
Oh AOD how I hate thee... Reply #35 – March 25, 2009, 04:54:48 PM You know this makes me wish I could rationally spend the cash to upgrade/replace my AOD right now. To get an AOD built to Lentech if not better specs by a local trans shop that specializes in AODs is about $2500 or so, and that would include a converter (2400-2600 stall Stallion) and instalation. The problem is I'd rather keep that $2500 in the bank. Perhaps I'm just greedy but as long as the AOD works I might as well just wait till it blows up. Quote Selected

Oh AOD how I hate thee... Reply #39 – March 27, 2009, 09:12:00 PM for that money, you could have a viper spec t56 with the correct splines set up for your car. Quote Selected
Oh AOD how I hate thee... Reply #40 – March 28, 2009, 01:53:58 AM Why don't you spend the $500 now to get it right and it won't blow up costing you $2500. Is it just me or does that make too much sense? Quote Selected
Oh AOD how I hate thee... Reply #41 – March 28, 2009, 02:01:10 AM Oh, wait...I'll be home on leave in June and I only live a couple of hours south of CHI-Town. If you want to come down to the farmlands, I'll sell you used stuff to help out the costs i.e. 2500 stall lock-up converter, TCI hardened input shaft, AOD shift kit (thats new...just never installed) and I think I still have a couple of filters for the AOD. When I blew up the second one, I went racing C-4. I just could not see the benefit in running an AOD in a race car when it costs $2500 for a Lentech and $1400 for a full race C-4. It would be on you to get the governor springs changed. They were in the junk tranny....I saved nothing outta it...it was in really bad shape. Quote Selected
Oh AOD how I hate thee... Reply #42 – March 28, 2009, 10:26:46 AM Hmm what brand is the shift kit? I may be interested. It's not that I don't have the money for an upgraded AOD it's the fact that I'm a little weary of spending the money for one when I have a house to worry about. I was saving money up last year for an AOD when the furnace went out. There went the trans money. I'd just like to have a bigger cushin before I blow money on "unessential" car parts. The trans should hold as is for another year as I don't plan on racing it at the track this summer. I have to get the trans fixed up, 24lb injectors, and a MAF to match first before I go back. Oh AOD how I hate thee... Reply #43 – April 02, 2009, 03:05:01 AM That's good. I will not be home until June. That would give you some time to save up.It's a Trans-Go Shift Kit, still in the box never used. The hardened input shaft is TCI and the Converter is a 2500 Lock-Up TCI with Anti-Ballooning plate. All for AOD. I also have some injectors...Dude.. I have got almost anything you need for your car. MAF's (3 kinds), Injectors...19's, 24's and 30's. I have got a complete wiring harness, computer, wheels (snowflake, convo-pro's, 10 holes, Fox police car wheels), 2 complete Nitrous Kits (one ford GT-40/cobra style, one carbed), a complete SO running motor, tranny, and computer. Soon to have tons of body panels from a cali bird w/ 70K miles and interior pieces. TC hood and beat up front bumper and cover. Just let me know what you want. It's all used stuff....it all needs to go. Got to unload this stuff. Quote Selected
