new window tint, how dark? Reply #1 – January 07, 2009, 12:00:58 AM 35 on front and 15 on rear is legal, I just had my wife's car done in all 15. It is very dark I wish I did 20 but...with smaller cars it looks darker, my tahoe has 15 and it looks legal.?????? Quote Selected
new window tint, how dark? Reply #3 – January 07, 2009, 07:53:43 AM I have 5% all around on my car and it is extremely dark. My car is black though so I think it looks good. What is legal depends on each individual state. Check this site to see. http://www.tintcenter.com/laws/ Quote Selected

new window tint, how dark? Reply #5 – January 07, 2009, 12:50:29 PM legal darkness is dependant upon the state that you reside in.. a call to the state patrol should yeild the answers for you. any reputable tinting shop can tint to the max without going too dark, Some vehicles already have tinted glass (altho it may not look as such) and say if the state says it must be 25% when its applied it could be 20-23% making it illegal. new window tint, how dark? Reply #6 – January 07, 2009, 05:31:19 PM IMO, tint looks better when it's a uniform %'age. Just tell them "legal, all around". Remember that what they show you as a sample is correct when looking out of the car, but misleading when looking at the car. Quote Selected
new window tint, how dark? Reply #7 – January 07, 2009, 05:53:01 PM Many states require a limit of 35% VLT (variable light transmission), which means you can't go lower than 35%. Most "limo tints" are around 5%, and anything above 50% doesn't make a noticeable difference, aside from the UV protection for your interior. I've installed window tint on every car I've ever owned, as well as all of my family's vehicles since the late '90s. I think 35% is plenty dark. A lower VLT will only attract the wrong kind of attention. My brother and I just installed SolarGard film on his new car - a 2006 BMW 325i sedan, black in color. He decided to go with 45% and it looks absolutely perfect on it.Don't go under the legal limit for your state. You will only run into trouble at the cost of marginally darker windows. Quote Selected
eyebrow? Reply #8 – January 07, 2009, 07:25:08 PM well i stopped by the tinting shop today and I am setup for friday for my tint. he guy has a window with 4 tint strips from light to darkest. i forget exactly what level it was but I asked him how dark can we get without it being illegal?and he said the 2nd to last woul dbe it which was pretty dark. the state law is a 25% or more visability rate. he said he can make it come extremely close to that in look but it will be about a 27% or 30%? he said its not extremely dark enough where i'll get pulled over every turn but enough to raise question but still be Legal. new window tint, how dark? Reply #10 – January 07, 2009, 11:32:41 PM We did the wife's Mustang over the summer and we did the darkest that Minnesota would allow - 50%. We probably could have gone a little darker, but we don't run a front license plate (also required in Minnesota) and we didn't want to draw even more attention. It sounds like you're on the right track. Good luck! Quote Selected
new window tint, how dark? Reply #11 – January 08, 2009, 10:15:06 PM well my dads co worker told me that in arkansas, the back glass and the back passenger glass can be as dark as i want but the drive and passenger window has to be at the limit or below it.So i figured i'd try and go with the dark limo tint on the small back passenger windows and the back glass and for the driver and passenger i'd try to get as dark as i can without breaking the limit.good? new window tint, how dark? Reply #12 – January 08, 2009, 10:28:59 PM That's only good if he's a cop or if he's someone who knows the law. If a cop does pull you over and you play the "my dad's co-worker said" card, it ain't gonna fly. Just call the DMV or do an internet search to see what the law actually is. Tint isn't anything I'd want to pay for twice, plus a ticket. Quote Selected
