Question about video game compatibility

Ok, so we are thinking of getting the kids either Rock Band or Guitar Hero for Christmas. They like both, so it'll probably be more a matter of cost than actual preference. So, to be honest, I don't really care what anyone thinks is the better game bundle to get.

What I want to know is... are the instruments for each compatible with the other?
If we get the RB bundle, with GH games work with it and vice versa?

the rock band drums will work on guitar hero: world tour(not recommended though), but the rock band guitar will not work on any GH games. and im not sure if the guitar hero: world tour drums will work on RB. GH guitars will work on RB.
