AOD 2-3 shift issue

Hey guys, well I fugure if I cannot use the Trans Am T5 tranny, I might as well figure out what the heck is wrong with my AOD. It shifts from 1-2 ok, but when it hits second, it wont shift out to third at all, under any condition. If I take my foot off the gas, the trans will drop down into a neutral state, but when I hit the gas the RPM's kick back up to where it hung before and grab again. I know Iv'e seen this before I just dont remember what causes it. If I have repaired and explorer trans, im sure I could tackle this puppy.

Before I go dropping in a stock 1984 tbird 5.0 tranny and grenading it with my 250hp mustang ho block in my bird I might wanna try to fix the one thats in it first. And I believe it is a mustang AOD that's in it right now...

Thanks

For what it's worth, I ran the stock AOD behind a HO for a little over 3yrs, beat the snot out of it daily...even hit the track with a set of slicks...never a problem.

I'm wondering though, if your 2-3 shift accumulator piston is cracked...or if one(or both) of the square cut seals on it have broken.  You'd need to drop the valvebody to inspect...I've seen 2-3 shift failures caused by snapped input shafts before also, but I didn't hear you mention anything about the RPM running away with the show.

Good luck,
Don

Well said, ill drink to that, I worked on a friends 91 cougar xr7 once and now i remember where i have seen this before, his input shaft was snapped, and that was probably caused by too many neutral drops! He was a dumba**. But yeah, if mines snapped, (got it this way) then possibly the same problem. It shifts from 1-2 very nicely. So maybe the trans itself is ok... Hmmmm... Ill pull the trans back and let you guys know what I find out. Thanks for the tip!

Neutral drop will not cause a broken input shaft to the direct clutch.  The direct clutch only applys force to that shaft when it wants to grab 3rd gear.  That shaft is most likely the cause of your no 3rd gear though.
