anybody know...

I need some information about the rear axle in my 92 dakota.

I do know its a 8.25 6 lugger with 3.90 gears. Now... its got bad carrier bearings it clanks clunks chunks and does whatever it sees fit.... I was wondering if anybody knew anythign about the pre 90's dakotas with the 8.25 and if it was the same peice but with 5lug axels and all that jazz.

Lemme know... its really starting to anger me.

are you sure it's the carrier bearings? see if you can wiggle the driveshaft near the pinion .

my 9.25" in a 99 ram had a bad pinion bearing. they were pr0ne to failing around the 100,000mi mark.

You sure the 5-lug Dakotas were 8-1/4? My 88 was 8-3/4 with "Sure Grip". It was 4X4, and it had the "1-ton" suspension package, though, if that makes a difference.

I miss that old truck. I'd trade the F-150 for another Dakota, albeit a newer one, in a heartbeat. The thing was just big enough (especially with the wooden box I'd made for it). It wasn't too bad on gas, either, at least compared to the F-150. I'm sure a Magnum 3.9 or 318 with a 5-speed would be better on fuel (and more powerful) than the TBI'd 3.9 was in mine, and it would have to be better than my 300/E4OD 4X4 F-150...

The magnums must be different, then - my old 3.9 TBI 4X4 Dakota with its 3-speed automatic easily topped 20 (I live in the boonies, all of my driving is highway). I never actually ran the figures, but I'd almost wager it did better than the Volvo. And that was with a front axle disconnect that was permanently connected...
