window adjustment

Newbie as of today. Need some help/tips for repairing driver's window on '87 T-bird. Hit the switch to let it down today and the front edge of glass lowered before the back edge did leaving the glass crooked in the door frame. The window motor works fine and glass will raise perfectly but will not lower properly. Hope this is just a small adjustment or clip-replacement. Also need tip on removing and reinstalling door panel without damaging it.  Any help greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the glue for the retainer let go. Need to resecure. I have not done this however I have seen that the use of gorilla glue would work. Door panel is best taken off with a trim remover to get under the clips that hold it in.

this is really a very common issue.  the clips from factory are glued on and tend to slip.  i've tried many epoxies, super glues etc...  i was thinking it was going to be an ongoing problem b/c nothing worked.  then i picked up black m3 windshield adhesive and the windows have never messed up since.  it's been 2-3 years now btw.

Thanx for the help. I think I will go with the black 3M. Two questions: Did you put the adhesive on both sides of the glass and/or clips? Also do you know about how many door panel clips there are and where they are located?

Not sure on how many clips. Should be able to feel them pretty easily with your tool. Just take your time.

The "glue" I don't believe is there to pull the window down. I jbwelded mine on and it works but when painting my car I found that the sleeve that the window slides in got pushed down. When the window would go down, once it hit a certain point (the edge of the sleeve where it started), the sleeve would be in the way and keep the one side from sliding down further until it overcame this obstacle and popped back into the groove.

Pull the door panel off and look at the sleeves/window tracks on either side that route the window and fix/push up if necessary. They should be pushed up as far as they will go and a bead of glue around the perimeter to hold it in place. The sleeve fits on two metal bars/braces that are bolted to the door in like 2 places.

like seek said, the clips are bolted to the power window frame/track.  what it seems like with seek's problem of one of the sleeves not going down right was b/c he didnt glue the clips in the right place?  i'd imagine it's a very easy mistake to do.  but maybe that wasnt his problem.

but back on topic, there are 2 clips/sleeves that hold the window tack/frame (that goes up and down) to the glass.  you should make sure you have the alignment right on it could pop off track again.  just take a liberal amount of the black 3m windshield glue (make sure its the windshield glue, bonds glass plastic and metal) to the inside of the clip while its bolted in to the track.  if your particular about things you can clean up the excess around the clips when you set the window into the clips.  also i just remembered from OLD advice from this forum and take a 3/8's drill bit or smaller and put about 2-3 small holes on each side of the clips.  the glue squeezes through the holes and makes a somewhat pin or rivet type deal.

just to tell you how well the 3m windshield glue works.  one of my clips broke in half, in other words theres only one side of the clip to hold the window.  ever since i used the 3m, it hasnt come loose once in years.  so dont expect the clips to ever come off.

Thanks AC. The drilled holes sound like a great idea. Only want to do this once!
