fuel pump

i was driving home for work one day and my fuel pump just seemed to die but i dont know if it its dead or not. i tuck off fuel fillter of the line and turned the car on and no fuel came out. i think it might be a Relay but i dont know where are any of the relays are at.

you can hit the gas tank with a hammer while someone turns the car over. hit it hard enough to jar the pump but not to hard to dent the tank. i've "fixed" many pumps like that.:hick:  will work for a while but eventually you will need to replace the pump. to test relays the easiest way is to swap it with another one unless you have a meter and a test light. then you power the coil side and check for continuity on the power side. but be careful there because i have seen relays that test good but don't make a good enough contact to flow enough current to power a circuit.

The new replacement relay was probably not the correct one.

For an accurate check you will have to check for voltages with the relay plugged in. Either fabricate a probe you can slip in along side the wires on the socket or use a needle/pin to pierce the wire.

Find the tan/light green wire at the self test connector under the hood. Looking at the connector with the row of four on the bottom, it is on the right end of the row of four. With a jumper wire ground the tan/light green wire.
Turn the ignition switch to run.
You are now setup so the pump should run continuously.

Now at the pump relay if you have 12 volt power on the pink/black wire the problem is the pump.
If no voltage on the pink/black wire check the red wire and the yellow wire.

The yellow should be hot at all times.
The red should be hot with the ignition in start or run , the EEC power relay is picked and the inertia switch is closed.

The 3.8 and 5.0 fuel pump relay circuits are the same. The 3.8 is what I have loaded up on my web site.
