buttstuffog gauges very inconsistent...WTF?

Well, this isn't the first time I've noticed this.  I first had this problem with my '88 XR-7.  It would "randomly" go nearly full sweep on the oil press. and temp gauge...the fuel level gauge was affected only slightly...Now, on my '88 Sport(my DD), it does the same thing but to a lesser extent....and there is no failure pattern.

FWIW, I pulled the JVC head unit out of the XR-7 ( i just don't drive it anymore) and ran the car for a bit.  The gauges were working fine until I turned the heat on...then they went haywire...slowly going to full sweep...also when I turned the heat on, it turned on the rear defogger light as well as illuminating the tail lights...the higher the fan speed selection, the brighter the tail lights got...no wiring from the deleted radio was touching anything...I'm just wondering what's going on....I'm a short step away from just installing aftermarket oil and temp gauges on the Sport, just to avoid future problems.

I was hoping that's all it was...I remember occasionally on my old bird, the fuel and temp gauge would go full sweep then immediately return to normal...but that was on a base digital dash...didn't know if the buttstuffog suffered from the same problem.

Thanks,
Don
