Door cup for making a mold September 13, 2007, 08:04:07 PM I work with someone who's been getting into plastic fabrication as a hobby. I mentioned that there are some ABS plastic parts that are really sought-after (starting with the door cups for the base door trim level) and asked if he'd be interested in trying to fab some. Anyhow, he's pretty excited about the idea, but we need something we can use to make a mold. My door cups aren't intact and they're hard to replace (as we all know) so I'm looking for a suitable candidate. Of course any color will do...intact is preferable, though I suppose cracked might do, but he stressed to me that any imperfections will show up in the mold. If anyone can come up with something decent we can try making a mold from that would be awesome. Quote Selected
Door cup for making a mold Reply #1 – September 13, 2007, 08:23:51 PM Sounds great, but we need them made from aluminum.I have an NOS set, but, they are NOT coming out for a mold.Perhaps I can fix one up and sand it smooth.I'll get on that tomorrow and see what i can do. Quote Selected
Door cup for making a mold Reply #2 – September 13, 2007, 09:26:00 PM I mentioned the problem with cracking to my co-worker and he said that he could probably embed washers at the screw-holes to prevent cracking. I don't know how well that would work, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. Quote Selected
Door cup for making a mold Reply #3 – September 13, 2007, 09:34:24 PM I haven't seen many crack on the screw holes.. its the front edge that breaks off. Quote Selected
Door cup for making a mold Reply #4 – September 13, 2007, 09:48:29 PM Yeah...I'll try to talk to him tomorrow to see if he has any ideas about maybe using some less brittle plastics. Quote Selected
Door cup for making a mold Reply #5 – September 13, 2007, 09:53:41 PM Well, I would imagine the cups aren't made of brittle plastic. Just not U/V resistant.. Over time they just get hard.. Something else that doesn't contribute good things.. the front edge of the armrest just under the cup.. comes loose and lifts the front edge of the cup up.. breaking it off. Quote Selected
Door cup for making a mold Reply #6 – September 13, 2007, 11:32:15 PM If your bud wants to make some little plastic parts, why doesn't he start with the door pull end caps for the TCs? He could probably sell them to almost everybody on this board. Quote Selected

Door cup for making a mold Reply #8 – September 13, 2007, 11:55:24 PM My understanding is the rubberized ones come on the LXs with standard interior. They are basically little plugs to fill in the screw holes on the door panel pull handles. The end caps come on the TCs. There are two styles, one with a little end cap used with a little chrome trim piece and another style without the chrome trim piece. I could get you pictures of both styles if your bud is serious about trying this. Quote Selected
