Interesting story and a Question.

So i get a letter in the mail the other day from a police impound lot stating that my vehicle has been impounded.
I'm like, ok, all my vehicles are accounted for so what vehicle of mine do they have.
Call my ex wife about her 87 topaz that she supposedly sped when we split up, she says she gave it to our old supper and he sent it to the wrecker.
So again i'm like what vehicle do they have of mine???
I call the impound yard and they tell me it's a black 94 aerostar,ahhh now i know(2 years ago i bought a used areostar off the dealer i worked for, for dirt cheap, fixed it up and sold it for a good chunk of change to an older lady and her mother) so i tell them i no longer own that vehicle and that it was sold 2 years ago.
They tell me it was last registered to me and no one else since(scratches head)so i say how much do i owe and is the vehicle damaged.
The lady on the phone tells me i owe 290 dollars and that the only damages on the tow bill say light scratches,she also tells me that if i don't want the vehicle i still have to pay the 290 dollars so i'm like wtf.
Anyhow,when i last seen this van it was mint and had 164km's on it(who know's what's on it now,or if it even runs)and now i don't know the condition of it and why it has been unplated for 2 years.
My guess is either something happened to the lady that bought it and it's sat for 2 years or a more plosable one, she bought it for someone else,through some bougus plates on it and someone drove it for the last 2 years until something broke(engine/trans,etc), i have no keys for it, neither does the impound yard so here is where the question comes in.
Can i get a key cut by the vehicles KEY CODE from ford or some other location???
Can the code be found in the vehicle somewhere???
Any help you guys have would be awesome.

Your DMV sales slip will get you out of it 100%. In WA we're required to hold them for 3 years. I never get rid of it.

So are you saying you WANT to get the van back to resell it at a profit...again, or that you want to wash your hands of the whole mess. 

As Michael says, I sure your TOD (transfer of ownership document up here in Canada) will be adequate proof that you legally sold it.  That or a bill of sale.

If you want to drive it, then go to autozone, get a new key and tumbler.  Drill out the old tumbler and replace it with the new one.  And then later, pay a locksmith 40 bucks to have a door key made.

You should get ahold of the lady who bought it and ask what the heck is up with it....also take your bill of sale in to show them it was no longer yours.

I don't think i still have the bill of sale,i haven't seen it in over 2 years.
The police imbound yard told me that because the van was never legal transfered it's still mine even if i can provide a bill of sale and therefore i'm responsible for this 300 dollar storage bill weather or not i want the van.
If i don't want the van they said that's fine but that i would still have to pay the bill,so if i'm gonna pay 300 bucks i want something in return not just a kick in the nads.
I also think the door and ignition key are the same on an aerostar but i'm not 100% sure,i think the liftgate is a different key.
I'm supposed to go and pick this thing up on saturday so i'll keep you all posted as to what this thing looks like and if it even runs.

I have a similar situation - I sold an Arctic Cat snowmobile 17 years ago and the DMV still has it registered in my name. I still get plate renewal forms for it every year, even though I don't renew it. I sold it to a Newfoundlander that was taking it to Labrador, and I guess he never registered it. Given that it was a '74 model he likely doesn't even own it anymore. I tried long ago to have it removed from my name but it was such a red-tape fiasco I didn't bother.

Bull$#!t. A Bill of Sale is a recognized legal document in all 50 states. The title stub or DMV sales reciept is a legal document in all 50 states. You do NOT own this car (and you can prove it) then you are NOT responsible for ANY fees, bills, etc, associated with it. Take this advice man, I've sold over 100 cars in the last 5 years, I KNOW what I'm talking about. I still have paperwork on every single one of them.

Actually in MI even if you have a Bill of Sale it doesn't mean anything. If the buyer doesn't transfer the title to their name you are still responsible for the vehicle. Every time I take a BoS to the Secretary of State (our DMV) they don't even look at it. Hell, I had to hunt down original owner (seller never transfered the title) just to get the title transfered because I thought the BoS would cover it. They state on their website that you should accompany the buyer to the SoS to ensure title transfer.

On the other hand my 95 Grand Am that was voluntarily repo'd and auctioned off wound up getting impounded. I got a letter from some city in Louisiana asking to pay the fees and come pick it up or they where going to sell it. I threw that letter away. I never wanted to see that car again. And I just realized your in Canada... so theirs probably different statues. Otherwise I would just walk away.

Update:
So i go to get my van today,overall not in bad shape,some rust that was not there before,a cracked rear bumper(i think the towing company did this as the marks are from the bottom up on both sides and are to even to be anything else,gonna take that up with them)dirty on the inside and 190k on the odometer.
Somebody drove it for 25k(bogus plates and no insurance)then got it towed due to having no money to repair it.
Got to the yard paid for it then proceded to drill out the ignition pin
( i bought a new ignition as they had no keys to it)what a nightmare.
I found out that removing an ignition is alot more than drilling out the pin,after 2 broken drill bits and 2 hours worth of messing around the ignition finally came out.
One hassle out of the way and now on to the next,battery was stone dead so i hooked up my booster pack and turned her over,no unusual noises and the engine cranks(good sign) but would not fire.
Now i see why it was towed,well first thing i did was pull the coil wire and cranked it,had good spark at the coil and could smell fuel.
Took a look inside the coil wire and wouldn't ya know it,rotted and corroded.
As i did not have a coil wire to repair it we had to manually winch it onto the car trailer(that sucked and was a pain in the a**), got her home and through on my old 5.0L coil wire and started cranking.
She fired and ran(after alot of cranking and throttle feathering)but would not move forward or back(no fluid on dipstick)then she died as soon as i touched the gas.
Tried to restart her with no luck so i figured that the dead battery was just sucking the spark down to much(the corroded battery terminals and broken secondary ground didn't help either) went and got a new battery,air filter,oil,tranny fluid,rear wiper blade and plug wires.
After repairing the ground,installing all the new parts and 4 1/2 litres of trans fluid she runs and drives like a top and has 4 new tires as a bounus.
Interior needs to be cleaned up and i have to replace the brakes i'm pretty sure(badly rusted and pulsing from sitting) and due a tranny service to repair the gasket leak but all in all i lucked out and the engine nor trans are blown and i got myself a van for 400bucks with quite a few new parts.
