How to crank engine without starting it? March 12, 2007, 09:29:31 AM Hello!It's time to change oil in my T-bird again. Guess some of you may remember I had a strange noise after changing the oil last time. My friend who works on engines said it was rather a lifter sound as it was audible once in front of his shop after starting the cold engine few weeks ago.I thought that it would be good to crank the engine without starting it until it builds up some oil pressure in the system again. The question is... how to crank engine without starting it (turn off the ignition and fuel pump). I had a redneck idea of short circuit the starter solenoid terminals, but I'm not sure if it's safe?I was also wondering if you have any experience with Petro-Canada Supreme 10W-30 motor oils? What do you think about Petro-Canada products at all? I know eg. Quaker State is a waste of time and money, isn't it?Thanks! Quote Selected

Reply #6 – March 17, 2007, 04:07:43 PM Jeez, a lot of complication for a simple task :hick:Just take the key out of the ignition (with the ignition off, of course) and use a jumper wire between the small wire on the solenoid and the big wire closest to the battery. With the key out of the ignition the engine will not start. Quote Selected

If your changing oil, the hood is open anyway...I never worry about cranking to get pressure, I just fill the filter approx 2/3 to 3/4 full of oil and install... Pressure comes up in a couple seconds... If I want to see if there are any bearing noises then I don't fill it, and listen to it carefully for the 4-5 sec it's running without oil pressure...
