In jockying things around on the '80, it looks like I'm going to stick a manual trans behind the 302 for a short while.

Now, it's an '80 302, so it has the 28oz imbalance and 157T. What I'm trying to figure out is what year ranges will work? '81 was when they switched to the 50oz balance, I know that.

you should be able to get one from an 80 mustang, it will have a 10'' clutch though, but you should be able to get one from a bunch of places because the 331 and the 347 are 28OZ balance

Not worried about a big clutch, nor do I need a fancy billet one. The 80-81 Mustangs didn't have a 302 though...

I think anything earlier will not be 157tooth.

Not sure what a '79 Mustang/Fairmont etc had toothwise.

As suggested, I might have to get a 50oz, 157T flywheel rebalanced to 28oz.

Why 157T?

Just get a 164T bellhousing (common) and a 164T flywheel (common) and voila. It all fits fine in a Fox body, there are a million of them out there.

I thought 50oz was '82+, and only in the HO engines. Same for the "351W" firing order...

All 5.0s changed balance and he has an sr0d (?) and has limited bellhousing choices.

OK, well maybe I'm confused?
The 5.0 Mustang stuff is what? 164T or 157T?
The balance change was in '81.

I'm using a 5.0 T-5 bellhousing.

5.0 Mustangs all used a 157tooth bellhousing.
3.8 mustangs used a 164 tooth bellhousing.
But the 3.8 bellhousing is for the longer input shaft T5 that all sn95's used.

If you had the 3.8 bellhousing and appropriate T5 you could simply use a 351 truck flywheel. Only issue is the use of the truck 5 speed starter. But you would also get the 11" clutch.

The Truck flywheel is 164tooth.

Oops, I got all turned around. hahahaaa I even confused myself.

Chuck, go find a flywheel from any old stick shift 289/302/351W Mustang, it will work. Or buy a new one.

Well someone said to use one from a 289, but a cursory check on a couple parts sites comparing a 79 302 to a 68 289 showed a different part number....

OK, well I guess I need some verification. I checked again, and what they were doing was listing a 79 and an 82 302 flywheel as the same...which they are not due to the balance. Oops.
The 68 289 and 302 flywheels are listed as the same....

I just looked around on partsamerica.com

As you found, they show the '79 (and '82-'85) to have a 50oz imbalance. [Standard #712]
"Older" 289 and 302s are 28oz imbalance. [Standard #789]
Later 302 are 50oz [Standard #711]

I haven't a clue why Standard shows two different part #s for 157T 28oz flywheels. Pioneer products does not.

'79 302's have a 28oz imbalance....

The two part #'s for the 50oz 157T is probably for the clutch size changeover from 10" to 10.5"
