transmissions and the goodies

well im going to put a new 302 or 351 in the bird, but i wanna go from AOD to a 5spd.  i know i have to get the TC pedal assembly, but what kind of transmission would you recomend?  just a regular one possibly rebuilt from a mustang?  like a 93 cobra?  or maybe an aftermarket trans?  and when it comes to rearends, i know a rebuilt 8.8 will hold 600hp proven.  its cheaper and would hold the 400 i plan on making just fine.  would you go the foot further for a 9 inch?  the problem i dont want to run into is the rearend being too wide.  i dont want say a 7.25 rear track and a 7ft track (for example) in the front.  im pretty much building this car to handle, b/c it does just fine stock.  hell i can keep up with a miata in the twisties.:birdsmily:

I would stick with the 8.8 These rearends are very strong from the factory. As far as T-5s go, it all depends on how much you have to spend. I am sure you know about Tremec stuff, but there is also G-Force that has a kit (or you can send them a T-5 case and they build it) that allows you to insert their internal guts kit in your stock T-5 case and is rated at 600 ft lbs. I thought about going with a G-Force kit for my wife's 95 GT 5 speed rebuild.

how much power can a stock T-5 take?  b/c i'd really want to get about 400 from the 302 (347 actually) and i can drive it easy till i can rebuild the tranny myself.  well if i have a beater i can just let the car sit till i rebuild the tranny. but i can get the engine, t-5, and 8.8 for about 200-250. from the junk yard.  i'd say about 600 after everythings rebuilt. 300 more for the block being reconditioned.  i mean i could theoreticly do that myself, but i dont have the tools and 30 years of experience.:birdsmily:

I'm running a stock T5 at around 300 HP. The previous owner of my car had a 331 with a centrifugal supercharger on it and he was pushing probably over 450 HP through the same transmission. If you're building the car for handling you'll be fine with the T5. If you EVER plan on bolting on a set of slicks and powershifting at the drag strip you can kill a T5 with a stock HO.

Also, DONT get a Turbocoupe pedal assembly. The TC uses a hydraulic clutch actuator and therefor the Mustang T5 bellhousings wont work. You need a cable pedal assembly from a Mustang. Also while the pedal assy is out of the car get an aluminum clutch quadrant. The stock plastic ones are notorious for stripping when used with anything heavier than a stock clutch.

Oh, and definitely get a MGW or Pro 5.0 shifter. I'm using a Pro 5.0 and it is awesome. It blows away the stocker and will protect your tranny from bent shift forks that happen when you "bang" gears... and you will bang gears:)
