Fuel pump ?

Have a 87 bird with 3.8 and wondering if there is a fuel pump relay and if so where it is located. Car ran fine yesterday but today starts and dies and I dont hear the fuel pump running at all. Figured a relay would be somewhere but have yet to locate. Just got the car recently so I dont have any manuals. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dan

Fuel pump relay is in the trunk, near the rear deck and the trunk "risers" near the pass side of the car. It should be a little green "box" looking thing. Jus tlook aroud alittle bit and you should find it

OK, colder weather can play havoc on the fuel pump inertia switch also. If you turn the key forward but can't hear the pump spin for a few seconds, it is typically either the realy or the inertia switch. On your car the switch is located in the trunk, driver's side, on the taillight panel. There is a cutout in the panel cover to access the switch. It needs to be pushed down in order for power to go to the pump; if it won't stay pushed down then the switch is bad.

Have you slammed the trunk lately? Might have tripped the inertia switch.
The reset button is hiding behind the hole in the trunk liner by the driver-side taillight.
Death awaits you all with nasty, big, pointy teeth.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. The plunger on the inertia switch wont stay down so I would think I have found the culprit. Is that available aftermarket or do I need a dealer? Again thanks for the help. My other birds are older(65's and a 70) and the forums for those are not nearly as quick to answer. Dan

It used to be a dealer-only item but I *think* it's available at parts stores. It was a common part amongst Ford vehicles. Last I checked it was roughly $85 US at the dealership (this was awhile ago, though). You may be able to find one on eBay also. At least you found the problem!

Thanks for the help guys, found one aftermarket for $85 and a special order so I checked the dealer for the heck of it, $45.
