That really depends on who you talk to. I have dual electric hyden fans on my 84 T/c. They work pretty good. I also have there fully adjustable controller. But the T/c's came with electric fans.  But recently I was thinking about replacing the engine dirven fans on my 94 jeep. Did some searching and it seems that most of the engine driven fans seem to do better. Because the electric fans are right on the raidator they block some of the rad instead of coolinng it. At high speeds they are more of a drag on the air going thur the rad. Making the amount of air goning thur there less. But at the same time the electric fans seem to be less of a drag on the motor especially if you get a very efficient fans. But like I said depends on who you talk to.  just my .02 cents

Once on an episode of Muscle Car when they were setting up they're El Camino they equiped it with an electric fan and explained that it frees between 10-15 horsepower I believe they said.  Was the major motivation for my Taurus fan swap.  Also I think it was Fordmuscle that did that to their Mustang and claimed 1-2 miles per gallon more in fuel economy.  As for the fan intself causing drag....well consider the Taurus fan atleast doesn't cover all the radiator and remember you're removing the factory shroud as well so that's also part of the equation.  It's one of those things that may have advantages and disadvantages.  On the downside, an electric fan will draw way more power but then again it's only on some of the time.

o0 thanks for the info.. do u think its smart to use an electric fan on a car that will used as a daily driver and a street racer or no? this was the fan i was considering http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=PRO%2D67015&N=700+115&autoview=sku

I'd stay away from that fan and get a factory fan with a good fan controller. The reason I say that is the factory fans are better quality, and motor replacements are found easy at any parts store. Have fun waiting for a new fan motor for a aftermarket fan such as a proform

On the Ford Muscle forum, they have a tech article using a Taurus fan. They put it on a supercharged 5.0,tested it in over 100 degree heat and under different cirspoogestances and it never let them down.I bought one a while back and decided I'm staying stock for now.my car is staying cool, and it's been over 100 every day for a month,so,I think I'll leave it.

I like how it opens the front up,But you can pull more air with a after market fan+clutch, than stock which I got and no problems.
But I think it's still a matter of choice.

Personally I'd stay away from the aftermarket fan unless you've looked into its history a bit.  I've heard they can be questionable as far as quality and effectiveness.  On that Mustang I mentioned before they drove the car to the track and made passes for a while and they said the temp gauge never climbed above the halfway mark.  With the controller mine has, it's supposed to come on at 185 deg and go off at 165.  On a hot day stuck in traffic I'd say it comes on for about 1 minute out of every 3 or 4.  Definately safe.

Hmm.  Guess there aren't many salvage yards in Queens?  Here's one on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.ca/17-3-8L-Taurus-ELECTRIC-FAN-Mustang-4000CFM-Jeep-5-0_W0QQitemZ190023813708QQihZ009QQcategoryZ33600QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem .  Beyond that you could certainly obtain one from your Ford dealership or probably any auto parts store, although they may sell knock-offs.  I wouldn't expect a new one to be cheap but a used one should work just as well.

Hmm..well Rockauto.com has one for $123 but it looks like a 3rd party manufacturer.  I'd still go with the used one but it's up to you.  Keep in mind if you go with the Taurus fan or really any decent aftermarket fan, your stock charging system may not be up to it.  Just so you know.

If you have the 5.0,do the 3G alternator upgrade. It's easy,it's very functional, and once you're done, you'll be able to power anything on your car, electric fan, stereo, lights, fog lights,etc....all at the same time easily. You'll ask yourself why you didn't do it earlier.

Lol.  You could spend the $300 on one of those, they are indeed 3Gs, professionally manufactured ones.  But Ford used the 3G in many different cars, some of them are like 90 and 100 amps but we're all after the 130 Amp version that can easily be found in 90's 3.8 Taurus's along with like F-150s and Mustangs and whatever....if you had access to a Pick'npull you could have one for 15 bucks, you could always look on ebay.  Incidently I'm involved in another thread here: http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?t=9925 That guy wants to swap in a 3G as well.

I bought those Hayden brand fans they sell at work. They were only like $40 walk the door. then the controller was like another $40. Full adjustable. This is my 84 turbo coupe twin 12" fans. 4banger water cooled turbo runnin 15psi boost. Factory replacment style 3 core rad. I also have the 3g 130 amp alt upgrade. It is the one from a 94 sANG 5.O. This is my everyday car. I work at a parts store chain so you can imagine I'm not to nice to it. 4 grand clutch dump almost every night at the end of the shift. Gotta burn them tires everyone does. Any how I've had this setup with the fans for 3yrs now and never a problem. So do what you want. The 3g alt was like $200 plus like $10 for the factory replacement plug the 4ga wire and the fuse, and the solder in 4ga copper lugs. I got heat shink also.

LOL, I lucked out when I bought that '94 taurus last year, it had a bad 3.8 in it...but the trans was good, and i've got the the 3G in my storage, ready to go on my next Tbird (or Cougar)
Takin' my time lookin' for the "right one"...but it isnt gonna be something I jump in very soon..
Anyway, I had mine checked out, it is indeed a 130 amp alt, and it is good...and no, I'm no sellin' it! :hick:

Yes,that's a good alternator. It seems to have everything you need in that kit.I started from scratch with a Taurus alternator and went to Lowe's for the rest.It took about an hour to do the swap. You'll need to notch the alternator bracket a little bit.I used my Dremmel tool with a cutoff disc.I took mine apart after a couple of months running it and polished it.It looks sweet polished.Good luck with the upgrade. You'll be glad you did it.

Bear in mind, Vinnie has an 88 Tbird.  What year do you have?  I ask because I'm pretty sure the brackets changed over the years and the procedure may consequently be different.  Maybe you can post a picture of your engine bay.

If you do a "dry run" install, just to mock things up,you'll see that the lower inboard edge of the alternator will hit the bracket,if your bracket is like mine (one piece unit for the alternator and smog pump).I took about a 1/2 inch by 2 inch slice out of the little lip and the alternator fit great.I just scored an "as new as a used alternator can be" 3G yesterday for $3.00 at the metal syard. It'll be my back up.It looks like it's fresh out of the box.A new one is nearly $200.00,so,I thought "just in case".

This should help you out. Not sure what the difference is between your brackets and Mustang brackets but it at least give you a visual of what needs to be done.

yeah, you can get the shroud and fan, but you only have a choice of 3 dimensions, and it might be difficult to make one fit the stock radiator well

go to jegs, and search something like "universal radiator shroud"

It came with the shroud and radiator combo. Jegs ran a special on the radiator, fan and shroud, and it all came together.
