Title: Broken crank pictures :(
Post by: Bob on August 20, 2006, 10:48:23 PM
Finally got around to breaking down the shortblock. I'm waiting for the heads to get back from the machine shop than I can put her all back together. I think I'm going to put the new shortblock in and the tranny in this week while I'm waiting for the heads. All my parts are in, I just have to pick up some gaskets and little stuff...

The piston on the right is my favorite, I might make him into an ashtray or something

Hah!  Because this catastrophe has made you start smoking again?  Or perhaps smoke more?

I'd keep it and start something like a " Shelf Of Shame " or the like

Wow. What exactly caused it to break?

I'm not sure why it broke, I wasn't even on her when it broke. I was sitting at a light than felt some bad vibrations and made my way to the right lane and BOOM she dead. I don't even have a cool racing story to tell you all :(

Now that I look back, I've have had some wierd vibrations for the last year that I thought was the drive shaft. When I get it all back together I'm really curious to see if my 70+mph vibration is gone. If it is gone than it must have been the crank, flywheel? balancer? or something out of balance that stressed the crank somehow..

I don't know, lets see what some of the engine gurus have to say... Tom? Nick? what you think?

Ok. Im gonna guess something was way out of balance. Soon I hope to tear down my 302. Im gonna have it line bore, and balanced, so hopefully I wont have to buy a new crank, pistons or even a block. That sucks though, you have such a nice car.

You dont **** around do ya?

I guess the old saying 'if your going to do something do it right' applies cause you shure out did yourself blowing that engine.

Hope the new one works out better, and next time break something in spectacular fashion... Or at least make up a good story :p

That shortblock been running strong for about 10 years and about 70k miles of hard running on the rebuild, I always kept up with oil changes and all that but she did see some nitrous for a couple years, and last year the cam and heads didn't help I guess..

That block and crank had 170k miles on it too

Need to make a wall of destruction not a wall of shame. I messed this part up in my quest for speed! That would sound better. Still sucks that it happened. It just gives you a chance to make it even better. One of the other pistons would make a great paper weight.

Wow I think you need a beefier block or less nitrous.;)  I'm surprised that after 170,000 miles the crank split. I mean some people rebuild 200,000 mile 5.0s and run fine.
