Title: decode my axle tag?
Post by: HAVI on August 13, 2006, 06:58:04 PM
I got this tag off the rear of an 87 cougar xr7.  The yellow marker kinda reads 88 and something else after it.  The tag says: top 445C
the bottom says 3SL08A887K29  I understand the 3.08 part, but why SL, and not just L for locking?  It also has the bigger smooth drums.  Any ideas?

its a 3.08 locking rear with 10" brakes, standard issue for the 87 XR7 if i remember correctly

All the traction -lock units use SL to denote it's presence.

The 88 =8.8" and the 7K29 is the date which is Oct 29 '87.. Someone has swapped it or you have a '88 as the '88s went into production late July, early August of '87... Als its been said all the '87s got the 7.5 rear...

The yellow paint marker that said 88 made me think it wasn't original, as the door tag said it had 2.73 gears.  Thanks for clarifying.
