Had my G/F do a burnout in the T-bird I got off Bird brain. This is the most powerful NA 3.8L I've owned. FUN car. She let off sooner then I wanted but at least I got a shot of it.
3.8 very nice what kinda mods are done to it
That isn't that good. One nite at the parts store I worked at I burned the tires on my 88 cougar 3.8 and we collected up most of the rubber it made a ball about the size of one of those shot put balls. I seemed once I got it going it just wanted to keep with it. This was factory setup with no mods.
Bah my 5.0 will do that if I just push on the gas at a stop. Nice burnout with a 3.8 though
yeah I know. If it was me driving it would have been WAY better. but it was a girl behind the wheel. I will do one this weekend and show you guys a better one. this thing breks em lose just by mashing the gas, on any type off pavement. only things i've got in it is a K&N panel fliter, and a mustang rear swaybar.:D
...who was thinking "If this guy thinks I'm walking home because the tire
blew up and there's no spare in the trunk, he's even crazier than all my
friends say he is."
I tried to do that in my 85 Stang w/ 3.8 CFI. The engine died a couple weeks later. They called me a killer. I DIDN'T KNOW!!! *cries* i didn't know.... :(
So it had about 120hp stock and you added the k&n and now it does that?
Is that head-gasket smoke? :giggle:
Seriously, I like the hood scoop!

Hehehe, nice burnout pic!
When the cougar was running i did some good burnouts, but all the time i was driving and i cant see my tire marks....
ahhh, super fun times....
I've attempted that a couple times but i'm pretty hesitant with stompin it, i can't afford detination =:/
HHAHAAHAH Thanks guys. NO it isn't head gasket smoke!
I'm not concerned for the well being of thios 3.8L anyways. I have a 351W waiting in my garage for just such a thing to happen.
Ha, Do more burn-outs! :headbang:
Try to power brake that thing. Why did you let a woman do a mans job LOL Also the one I had was an 88 with the Good EFI. I'm sure that makes a difference.
:giggle: Nice.
Ive seen plenty of 3.8 blow headgaskets lol, but mine never did. But, I did baby mine when I did have it, but run them hot and they will blow.
well my 87 3.8 would die or not move the wheels at all if I tried to power brake it. My 86 5.0's would do it all day long.....
my 3.8 did it all the time. i think the efi ones will do it beter than Cfi
This one is EFI. And it was "power braking" She just let off right after it hit second, because she seen a car coming way down the road. I let her do the burnout because I wanted to get some cool camera angles, but she didn't do the burnout long enough.:giggle:
the 88's had 140 and more torque. Others are 112 to 120hp.
You say EFI but does it have the Crab type EFI or the good stuff like what a 5.0 has. I think only the 88's got the good stuff. As usual ford fixes almost everything wrong with a car the year before they stop making it.
You mean mine? Mine IS EFI. See?
:flame:
you mean me? Mine is EFI. See?
88's had 140 HP 215 TQ
when I had the 14" stock tires and the auto I could turn em over all day.. But these 245/50r16's dont like to spin. even with the 5 speed. If I drop the clutch it will make some smoke...
yep that is the good EFI
The Clean Version of EFI.

ohhhh...... That is really clean man! NICE 3.8L vantage. Insperation, IF I were staying that way. going to swap in the 5.0L from the car in my sig next week.
I'd say mines got about 165-170 HP now, Flowmaster exhaust, K& N airfilter, Bosch Platnium plugs but w/ almost 110K on it.
Good tires will hook, not smoke unless you have insane amounts of power..... You also have done suspension work so You're car probably plants the tires pretty well.
mine certainly wouldnt. the 3.8 had no balls. i could breakstand it till the tires were gone though. or, in the sandy spots in the road....lol the 88 auto sport wouldnt either. the T5 sport i have would though, TQ-ing it up to a spin and rolling out of it, with 273 gears.
the stang will smoulder the 245s just by stuffing the throttle, no clutch/rev action...its got 327 gears...
 I have the same rear end setup as you, but I can barely squeal from a stop. Then again, I have big 16's and you have 14's. My car is also py CFI with 1/2 tank of 8-month old gas.
well, i call BS on that but hey, i have never posted a burnout pic either so....when i know better, i try to keep it to myself. sometimes though.......
I hope the :bs: call out isn't on me. Why would I lie about doing burnouts?
no, no..i actually grabbed the wrong quote...lol nice TQbrake. i remember the first time i had my woman do one in my first sport. even the 87 3.8 i had i could power brake the tires off of it. i realy wish i had some vids or pics of that stuff...
BS...none of mine would even come close to breaking the tires free. sure a chirp or a touch of tire spin, but no tire spinning fury goiong on there. needed the brake on the auto with 373s. the T5 tbird will smoke them okay with a little brake, some revs and clutch action. its got 225s and 273 gears on it though.
EDIT:
see...i try to keep my mouth shut, cause i always feel like im calling out someone or just being a dick when im basically teasing/playing.
Don't worry about it man, no offense taken here. My 3.8L doesn't spin them (one) long, maybe 2-3 feet without the brakes, but it can turn 'em. My 5.0L T5, will roast them from a roll, all the way THROUGH first and well into second, but it has shiznitty 13 year old rubber on them.
I didn't mean to sound like I was calling you out, just wondered who you meant was BSing. No problems.:D
My car(with the HO) will annihilate the tires from a standing stop and I just had the clutches repacked when my 3.73's were installed a few weeks back...I'm even laying 10-12ft of rubber when I lay into 2nd. Tires spin almost all the way until 2nd...get a little wheel hoppage then 2nd comes in hard. It's an auto with stock convertor.
I wouldn't think you have that much power. Your air filter, is it just a panel filter or is it a cone filter. And your exhaust, cat back, dual or not? Did you put headers on it? And Bosch plugs do jack.
End Hijack.
with a complete HO conversion and 373 gears, sure. with the suckpump SO, no way.
this is what im talking about (not to single anyone out, sorry dude)
http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showpost.php?p=95699&postcount=4 (http://"http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showpost.php?p=95699&postcount=4")
now, sure it might. the SO is TQy but not THAT TQy. hell, its been years since i drove my old 5.0 HO 373 T5 car. that little car ripped. full HO mind you, what im talking about is all motor, no fancy clutch action, or engine reving. the car would NOT break the tires totaly free as to smoke them up by just floring it. the car actually squeeled the tires and rolled the car right out. no smoke, no rubber. sure if i "fanned" the clutch and threw a few rpms at it the car would smoulder the tires, no doubt. with my most recent 88 sport (T5, SO with HO tb, intake, egr spacer, true dualw/ headers) i would have to rev her and fan slip the clutch to realy break the tires free and leave rubber. just rolling it off idle and stomping it, wouldnt cut it. its got 273s as well though. maybe with the 373 gears it would break them good and free, but i seriously doubt it. almoste too much gear for the SO to do that. with the aod. doubt it more. not withought power brakeing it to get the revs up and the tires spinning. do that, let off the break and yeah, you can leave a good 60 feet of posi rubber on the ground.
id love to see some vids. i have had enough of these cars to know what they can, and cant do. i layed a TON of rubber all over town the few summers i had my blue 88 sport. i also knew what it took to get the car to do it. you can power brake anything. i abused the snot out of my 87 lx 3.8 car. went through several sets of tires with that car (my first car). i can spin the 31s off of my 4cyl ranger. sure its fun, its cool. its a great time and makes for great pics! but for some reason it bothers me when guys with basically stock tbirds claim that their car spinds the tired on grass or dirt just by putting it in gear, or will spin the tires free on dry pavement. i know im kind of being a dick. i must be in some sort of mood lately, so i apologise in advance. do up some vids, show me yours, and ill show you mine.
EDIT: i think it was realy cool that 1WLDBRD was willing to post a cool pic like that. i dont want you guys to think im g on that. i think im just spitefull that i have to/have sold my baby.
I understand what you're trying to say there man...it's cool, I don't think you're being a dick so I wouldn't worry about that. I find it a little hard to believe also....the SO falls on it's face real early to, and I doubt that with just an HO intake, shorty headers and dual exhaust that it would help much...still have the low compression and stock cam.
I remember the first time I took my bro for a ride after I had the 3.73's installed...I hit the rear tires with tire shine(on the tread) and had them aired up to 40psi...lol....I spun the tires straight through to 2nd, got really sideways and stayed on the limiter for a few seconds in 2nd gear before laying off...lol...he was like no F'ing way man! Then I told him the truth and his excitement level dropped a bit...lmao....he wasn't used to seeing 6k rpm in second gear in a matter of 15 feet...lol...what a day that was.
I think I'll have to post pics of both me 'Braking it in 2nd gear and me just hammering it from a stand still...no tricks...maybe I'll even include a pic of my proving grounds...lol-tracks everywhere.
cool. ill have to get some pics of bids together myself...lol i cant do anything with the Tbird cause, technically its sold. i have the stang though, and that will do some neet things ;)
The cat backs 2 1/2 IN non dual add aroudn 15-20HP, K & N flat panel over 10Hp and bosch about 3 maybe haha
:rollin: You should consider yourself lucky if you even gained 10hp to the wheels...lol. A 2.5" single cat-back behind a stock 3.8=maybe 4-5rwhp.....K&N panel filter= maybe 0.5-1rwhp...Bosch plugs=priceless...lol, j/k you most certainly gain a big goose egg with trying to change out plugs in a 3.8.
Figuring in for the average wear and tear of 100k+ miles....CONGRATULATIONS! You make as much power as the car did when it was new(maybe)!!!! :hick:
RWHP? FWHP more likely, if that.
Wow I haven't been paying attention to this thread;) . Yeah the car won't make that much smoke but it'll smoke the tires a bit. I can punch the throttle from a stop and lay 7-10 feet of rubber and get some smoke. There are factors that play into this though.
1. I have 14" wheels and they are wrapped in Uniroyal Tiger Paws. Probably not the most sticky tire ever.
2. The streets around here are salted in the winter and are pretty worn because of that and heavy traffic. My 132,000 mile 93 Buick Century V6 can spin the tires on most streets around here:giggle: . I swear the streets are like glass. Hell I can spin the tires with the A/C on in 90* heat in the T-bird. Now if I went some where with new pavement or better maintained streets I doubt I could smoke the tires without a power break.
Oh yeah I'm not mad. I was amazed that the T-bird could do it myself. Now on nice new streets she'll just squeel the tires and maybe leave 6" of rubber:giggle:
