Ok, so we have a newer desktop Sony Vaio. I don't use the computer, so I don't know what was changed or screwed up, but when I turn on the thing, windows starts to load and then this screen comes up saying that there is an error in software or hardware that won't allow it to boot. I tried messing with everything in the bios, tried to boot in safe mode, keep getting this screen.
After the first couple of sentences it says: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
At the bottom of the screen it says
TECHNICAL INFORMATION:
***STOP: 0X000000ED (0X863577B8, 0X0000006, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)
The recovery discs are nowhere to be found. Any help would be appreciated.
nevermind for now, I'm going to try the second method in this (http://"http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/winxp/howto3/unmountable.htm") link

Thats about the jist of it, if you have a Windows XP cd (I pressume that's what you're running), run the chkdsk /f/r command from the recovery console command line.
the master boot record is hosed, it see's the drive as bootable but can't mount the file directory.
as mentioned, run the chkdsk/f/r from recovery console then also try running fixmbr after that.
