Title: 4r70w?
Post by: 88 Blackbird 5.0 on July 15, 2006, 09:59:10 PM
Hey guys.  I just bought an 88 TC that I want to install an EFI Windsor in.  I'd like to back the Windsor with a 4r70w tranny.  From what I know, the 4r70w's are electronically controlled, unlike the AOD's that came in the 88 T-birds.
Would it be a simple as swapping in a newer harness and EEC to get the tranny to work?  If not.  What would I have to do?  Any advice on how I can get that tranny to work, would be really appreciated.  Thanks guys.

Vic

This standalone unit will run a 4R70W.

Thanks for the info.  After researching that stand alone, controller.  I've learned that it doesn't work very well, if at all.  It looks like I'll be sticking with an AOD out of an SC.  Those AOD's are built stronger than normal AOD's and consequently rated to handle more power.

Will just bought a hybrid trans for his '87. It's an AOD casing with the guts of a 4R70W, no electronics needed. It's the best of all worlds. Unfortunately I don't have a link but hopefully he can chime in with some thoughts about it.

You can put the drums and the sprags out of the 4R70W into the AOD. They are alot stronger, I would suggest an aftermarket valvebody. Depending on the H.P. level will dictate the other stuff, like convt and gear ratio inside. The lower H.P. levels you can stay with the 2 pc frt shaft. But if going over 500 RWHP go with a NON locking convt and a C6 spline.

PS    Been there and did that.

Interesting...most (almost all) posts I found about the Baumannator TCS were positive. Do you have any links to negative reviews?
