Title: Porting E7 heads
Post by: SRBird on July 15, 2006, 01:36:20 AM
Great forum folks, I've pretty much got the motivation and ideas on how to modify my 87 Sport from reading these threads and tech info found on CoolCats and Thundercats. Wouldn't have known what to look for otherwise.

I have an old set of E7 heads I had pulled from an LSC awhile back. I'm thinking of trying to Port/Polish these myself with the right directions. What books or websites would anyone suggest I look at? I'm especially interested in something possibly specific to the Ford heads. Any sage advice on what works and what not to do? I also have a spare upper and lower HO intake that I can experiment with.

Another concern is ...would the E7's have piston to valve interference when combined with 1.7 roller rockers, SO piston heads and E5 HO cam? I sort of don't want to find out after working on the heads if you know what I mean, LOL. Thanks.

well let me just say. that porting can be really ez with the rite tools or a major pain in the arse. i use double cut carbide bits. cutst threw the iron like a hot knife threw butter. if your not really putting a big cam or big intake your probbly just beter off fixing some areas. open the exhaust ports to what ever size header. smooth out the emissions bumps.  and where you get most of your time is in the bouls from what i hear. you can clean up the intake ports but they arent as bad as exhaust. try google. plenty of write ups on porting e7's or Corral.net search function lost of info on that site. .. good luck with the porting. oh and a cheep home depot die grinder will work way beter than a dremmle.

Here's one to get you started. It's been awhile since i've studied this subject. But I'll post the links as I think of them.

E5 denotes a 1985 part number.  The 85 HO cam is a non roller cam and will NOT work with a roller block without modification.  It'd be kind of a step in the wrong direction on anything but a full out drag car IMHO.  Do you mean an 86-up HO roller cam?

To answer the question on the rockers, a stock HO cam and 1.7 ratio rockers SHOULD clear a flat-top piston motor with E7 heads.  I've been told that .500 lift is not a problem with these parameters and had a similar setup with my old combo (I had an aftermarket cam)  Every motor is different and I would recommend checking piston-to-valve clearance just to be sure.  Also, the stamped steel valve covers will not work.  The aluminum HO valve covers will IF you remove the oil fill baffle on the inside of the passenger side valve cover.

Thanks for the info and links. I've just taken a quick look at the links and could see that there's good info to be found. The E5ZE cam refers to the first version of the HO roller cam found on the 85 (5-speed only), and 86 thru 88 5-S and auto. This cam had same duration and lift on both intake and exhaust, whereas the later HO cam had same lift but longer duration on the intake. Now to get onto some serious reading Any other tips are appreciated.
