I got a new axle for my car... but it looks like I didn't get what I thought I did.
This axle is the narrow housing 83-85 unit.. But its a 3.45 Posi rear... so its out of a TC or XR7.
First picture. You can see on the radius behind the wheel how shallow it it is. This is my 88 axle
Second picture. You can see how long the radius is on the back of the axle .
Now do you see how far the shoes are away from the on the second pic? Its not because of the incorrect drums as I was told,,,, but because the backing plates are incorrect! Looks like someone tried to do a 10" drum conversion and used the wrong backing plates... You can see the incorrect wear pattern on the shoes.......
Here you can see how close the backing plate is on the contraption axle (as I like to call it) is to the quad shock bracket. Now on my old axle there is plenty of room..
maybe it was a mustang axle :dunno:
It might be a Mustang one (from a 2.3T car)that someone with an 86-88 Tbird/Cougar w/ 10" drums tried to use, but never quite got right, or it's an 83-85 TC or 84-85 XR-7 7.5 axle......which is different than his 88 7.5.
its ok, rear brakes are over rated anyway... just cap off that line, toss it up, and come up to cat jam. if u need to stop faster, u can down shift lol :p
makes burn outs easier. Or more like a brake stand. Even a stick 3.8 should be able to do that.
THIS MOTHER ****ER IS GRINDING ALREADY!!!!!
CAT JAM
CAT JAM
CAT JAM
CAT JAM
CAT JAM..
.......
.....
Fading fast.
*edit*
I wasted my 2000Th post on this?????
whay dont you just get the correct drums and use it as is?
1983-85 t-bird/cougar used an offset drum to correct for the shorter housing and longer axles.
Or use mustang axles.
It was most likely an 83-85 rear, and the dude threw his 88 axles, drums and backing plates on, and didnt know the axle length difference would have an effect.
Use stang axles temporarily, the only downfall is with snowflakes, the rear wheels look like they sit far inward.
What does the other side look like?
I'm lookin at the #2 pic and I see some shiny axle, like it's not in all the way or to long.
Are you 100% sure about this?????
Cause if so the guy was right and I feal bad.
*edit*
Autozone lists only one part number for all of them for 10".
The backing plates are what is different......not the drums.
1983-85.5 Cougars/Thunderbirds with the 7.5" rear have the identical rear end used in 1987-93 4-cylinder Fox Mustangs (and possibly earlier). The axle housing is the same width. The 9" brake drum had a large offset.
Quoted from coolcats guess i was thinking of the 9" brakes.
9" drums are different part numbers....
10" is not.
I still have the 7.5 with 2.73 from my '83 with the drum brakes. If you need something in a pinch just let me know, I am about three and a half hours one way from you.
When my brother and I swapped from the 85 7.5 to the 88 tc 8.8,we tried to use the axles, backing plates and all from the 85 7.5.The axles were too long just like in pic 2.Even had 1/2 in. to 3/4 in. of brake shoe showing.Went to the you pull it and grabbed some axles from an 84-86 fairmont/ltd.Everything slid together like it was meant to.
