Hey all.
I'm in need of some help.
I've got an 86 cougar with the 3.8. I recently changed the engine and put an 87 engine in it. It began over heating right after the engine change out. If I leave the AC off it still runs hot but doesn't go into the red. Since then I've changed out heater hose, upper radiator hose, thermostat, new radiator and cap. I'm not sure i've I've purged all of the air out yet but it still seams to run hot. More driving will tell for sure.
Anyone have any ideas or tips? Is the water pump on the 86 and 87 different from eachother? (ie supposed to spin in different directions). Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to start driving her a lot again.
Thanks guys.

Turn on your defroster. Have you got Heat coming out of your defrost vents? If not, or it's not as warm as it should be, you have an air lock. Get it out before driving too far or you will wreck that motor.
Nope. I get the hot hair. That has never been an issue. Any other ideas? I'd like to take it to DeMoines next weekend if I can. I'm changing out the water pump tomorrow to see if it makes any diff.

it could be a bad hose on the heater core or a clogged engine. As far as I know the 86 and 87 engine's are identical.
i saw this post a couple days ago,, what is the story on the newer 3.8 as far as where it came from?
Did you carry over your old fan clutch or did the new engine have one on it? With a cold engine, you should not be able to spin the fan more than a half turn with all your force.
you might want to do a compresstion check on all the cylinders and see if there is not a head gasket issue, they are cheap and easy to replace. Its the only thing left that you have not done yet. Does it smoke any?
The water pump has weap holes on the top and bottom so you should be drippng coolant if the pump is bad.
There is a white cap on top of the intake. Take the rad cap off and then fill the engine from the cap in the intake. Fill it till the rad runs over, put the cap on the rad and then fill the up the till the anti freexe runs out of the white fill cap. Start engine and turn on the heater and make sure the heat is warm(hot).
hey all. Sorry it took me so long to get back. Been busy as hell. JCASSITY -- it's from a junk yard and I was told it had 150 compression on all cylinders. That fan is pretty good. The car over heats moving and not sitting still so the fan would not be affecting how it's heating up at that point.
Fast Cat -- I never got a chance to do that because...
I went to change the plug wires since it needed to be done and then was going to time it. Immediately after doing that it started running like absolute total shiznit. Would barely run and sounded like a poof, poof, poof out of the drivers side. I check the wires and they were in right. At that point i was too pissed off and took it to my mechanics. My buddy drove it and I saw large puffs of white smoke and could smell a sweet smell. My mech said he took it in the shop and then back out again because there was a puddle of green shiznit out of the tail pipe.
The good part is that my fiance knows I don't have the time right now to change it or the money to have my mech to do it she is paying him to have it done because she misses the car!!!! Hopefully nothing else got f'd up in the process. I think this motor is now going to be on limited time. and i really hope the head isn't cracked but i'd bet a hunder bucks it is.
Just me off. I was so happy to get it in and it WAS running so awesome. I nkew i should have changed the thing before I put it in but that was another 100 bucks and several hours I didn't want to mess with at that point mostly because of the time. That just ****ed me royally. The worst part is that is all happend after the warranty went up. oh well. Tis life.
I'll let you know how it all turns out.
