Post by: thundergrowl on July 13, 2006, 10:19:49 AM
for insurance purposes. I'll have the report tomorrow or Monday.

Anyone else have their car appraised? Mind sharing the value? As long as I get enough to cover what I have invested I'll be happy.

You better be careful of the amount of that appraisal...

I may want more money... :D

I had the CJ appraised about a dozen years ago... Was $11,300... Hagarty has agreed to insure it for twice that amount with just sending them pictures...

Good luck with that! :)

Sure Tom, the tires on that car was worth almost what I paid for the car.

As long as you are happy, I'm tickled silly...

Hell I hope they insure it for twice what you paid...

I had the convertible appraised a year ago. I was happy with the result...essentially I have never lost one penny with that car. Every cent put into it has added to its value. My insurance agent simply modified my existing policy to reflect the verified value--it was much easier to do that, than try to reapply for another policy. I don't discuss the numbers with people but suffice to say, it's high for a Fox-body Cougar. ;)

I don't want it to come back too high. After all, the appraised value is what determines the cost for insurance.

Eric, I asked for numbers so I could get an idea what other cars in similar condition to mine are appraising for. I knew yours would appraise for much much much more than mine. :)

Yeah, it's pretty much considered a one-off so the value is skewed just a little bit. ;) I would think anything over $8-10K US is great though.

One gas-guzzler is enough, thanks. ;) Fortunately I don't drive much and only need to fill the Mountaineer once a month. And it's got a smaller tank than the Cougars, by 1 gallon. Makes it a little bit easier to keep the tank filled. Not! LOL.

Yeah, I was...if you get a quote halfway close to Tom's then I think you'll be very happy. I know his was a different car and all, but still...that's a good, solid number.

Basically the values on these cars bottomed out close to a decade ago. They have not risen in value because the supply is still meeting the demand, for the most part. Between 1983-88, there were over 600,000 Cougars and over 1.2 million Thunderbirds made. So over 1.8 million cars, figure if even half of them still exist today, then there are still a LOT of them out there changing hands. Only when you get to rare, low-production or in-demand models (XR7's, 1987 20th Anniversary, Turbo Coupes, etc.) will you typically see values go up--maybe a little, if you're lucky. It's good and it's bad: good, because you can get a really nice car for cheap. Bad, because it's not going to be worth much in the short term.

The only way I see overall values going up in the near future is if

a) people wreck them in unusually high numbers and use up all the crash parts
b) someone digs up a rare model we've never heard about before (unlikely at this point)
c) a major company starts reproducing parts for us, or
d) Chip Foose redesigns one for Overhaulin'.

Now d)....that one would have an enormous effect on our cars since he has the "magic touch". Because there are no parts catalogs for our cars, and one would be forced to be creative, Chip is about the only TV personality that could pull it off successfully. I can see him doing a two-tone T-Bird with a big ol' Ford crate 5.0 cammer engine and a gullwing door conversion. ;) I think if that were to happen, values would shoot up virtually overnight. Think about it: people see the show, search the web afterward, FIND US...all kinds of new members to the message board...I think we could handle that kind of fame, don't you? ;)

Now for individual cars, the better shape your car is in, the higher the value...plain and simple. Appraisers know if a car has been abused. If you have a clean car inside, out, underneath, and in the trunk, you have nothing to worry about. That's the beauty of an appraisal: the cleaner it is, the more your value goes up, and you actually can "beat the system" vs. the general values at the time.

Or maybe he can do my base model I'm getting this weekend. Oh! I forgot to tell you, my sister is finially giving me her 88 t-bird (see attached) that I've been after for years.

Hey, maybe he can do both! :D

Mine was appraised at $4k two and a half years ago. The condition and low mileage (47k at the time) contributed to that value. Next spring, after I have done some mods to it (the chassis/suspension, interior, paint and hopefully, 5-speed swap) I will have it reappraised.

Anyone else have their car appraised?

I had mine done a month ago to cover my ass. Basically, here in Ontario the vast majority of insurance companies are cracking down and won't touch anything modified for insurance thanks to the so called "street racing plague" that's drawing unwanted attention to the car hobby thanks to all the ricer kids that do their best Vin Diesel impressions in mom's Honda and kill somebody. Many of said companies will drop you for simply lowering your car or putting on aftermarket wheels. Now that the Bird is coming up on 20 years old I have the option of switching to a Collector/Hobby car specialty insurance company which bases coverage off a "No Depreciation appraisal" (similiar to the coverage offered by Hagerty which isn't available in Canada)

In a nutshell, I'm covered for just about every dollar I have in the car with the appraisal I got.

I'm going with Gary Steeves Insurance Company (http://"http://www.garysteevesinsurance.com")

Looks like my trip to pick up the base T-bird are off for this weekend. I couldn't get anyone to go with me on the 4 hour drive to drive back the Ranger. I'll try again next weekend.

I was talking to the appraiser on the phone today. The appraisal is ready for me to pick up. I asked the value and he said about $4500. Not bad since I was saying between 4 and 5K. I got to pick it up today. I'll post what it actually is later.

It looks like you've got a car in good, not quite pristine shape. What makes it worth $4000 USD?

NADA lists your car for a maximum of $2525
KBB lists your car for a maximum of $1610
Edmunds lists a maximum of $1683

I'm not trying to denigrate your car...just curious as to the difference.

PS Your link in post #14 doesn't work...maybe b/c I'm behind a company firewall...that could also explain why your pictures in post #26 don't work for me either.

I'm not sure what makes it worth that much. I've noticed around here cars are appraised at twice what they would sale for. Maybe it's because the insurance is based on the appraisal. The higher the appraisal the higher the insurance cost.

Seems like you got a pretty good price there.  So is your insurance going to go up after you submit the paper work?  If so how much more?  I was thinking about getting mine appraised sometime soon but I'm going to have to check with my insurance company to make sure they will still cover a modified car.

With the old "normal" insurance on the TC I would pay $800/year for third party liability (500K), collision or upset (300 deductible), and comprehensive (100 deductible).

The new "Special Interest" insurance I'll have third party liability (1million), collision or upset (100 deductible), and comprehensive (100 deductible). The only thing is the car now is an occasional use vehicle. It should only cost about $150 on a $5000 appraised car.

The final cost is in. $155.04 for the year.

Hey Thats great Paul...( I'll send that bill now for the difference in price you paid) :giggle: :

When you do a couple of little things here and there(such as repaint the rear bumper), you probably should submit pictures to the insurance co. to show them you are improving the cars condition...

That's another benifit about getting the appraisal; I've had it confirmed where the car needs attention.

Limited mileage allowed per year, not to be used for this, that, and the other thing, etc.

Kind of like collector plates, I guess, where your Model T must be maintained in excellent condition, only driven in parades, on Sundays, or for special events, must be kept in a climate-controlled garage, that sort of thing.

And here's the Newfieland "Antique Vehicle" rules (quite similar)...

In this Province an "antique vehicle" is:

a vehicle that is 25 years of age or older, maintained as nearly as possible with original component parts; certified by the Newfoundland Antique and Classic Car Club, and owned as a collector item; operated solely for use in exhibitions, Club activities, parades, and other similar functions; and used for occasional family pleasure but, in no event, for general transportation or business purposes.

I got the coverage through www.garysteevesinsurance.com (http://"http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/www.garysteevesinsurance.com") The Coverage is underwritten by Elite Insurance Company. They even have a policy for modified street cars at a slightly higher premium. My insurance is called "Silver Wheel Plan - Special Interest" for vehicles 15-24 years old and the custom car insurance is called "Custom Wheel Plan"

My 87 is not considered an antique yet but when it's 25 years old the premium will drop.

We have the same thing here in Ontario (underwritten by Elite) except it's offered through Lant Insurance Brokers.

I'm switching mine over to the Custom Wheel plan for next year.

My coverage won't be any cheaper than what I currently pay but the car will be covered for the full appraisal amount in case something ever happened (knock on wood) unlike my current situation which would give book value which wouldn't even cover the cost of the wheels.

My parents still pay my insurance, though next month I will be on my own for the and with two cars, (one being the :shakeass:pirate) it will be about 84 something a month...

the :shakeass:pirate is more expensive than my cat, I couldn't beleive it, though I wonder if I told the insurance company that I would already have my casket, i could get a cheaper rate?

Oh well

Daniel

PS 22 soon to be 23, and they shouldn't have giving us new smileys! SO sorry if I offend anyone, I couldn't resit.
