Title: can you use synthetic fluid in AOD
Post by: Innes on July 08, 2006, 07:56:53 AM
I know ford AOD trannys gotta use type-F fluid and no other type, but what if you want to use synthetic fluid. They only have one type of synthetic tranny fluid. Will it be OK or is it not recommended.

I would tell you to read the back of the bottle for the best input. If I remember correctly the Synthetic fluid I've seen said it meets ford, chevy & dodge specs.  I know that GM used that DEX COOL antifreeze but if you read the bottle it meets all of there standards not just chevy.

Ancient Fords used Type F.

How positive are you about that cause when I go to the parts store there book says type F for trannys and power steering pumps. Last time I asked was about a year ago for my 88'bronco when I did the P/S pump that’s what they said the book said.

Like I said read the bottle. I know most t-5's use dextron only the early ones use the syncromesh gear lube. Call the ford man. I think that my 88 said dextron on the dip stix.

I've been running the synthetic B&M trick shift in mine with no problems at all. I think the book calls out type F for the power steering pump but when I changed my rack and pump I just started running mercon in them to simplify things.

I use Type F in all my trannys.  AOD, C3, A4LD, T5WC....all have worked fine with it...at least no worse than they did before I had them.  Nissan Type F to be exact...because my dad had a surplus of it....key word...had.  Plus these cars won't have a warranty so screw the dipstick lol.  And if it works, why fix it?

No, but I'm pretty sure that's the place Momsy got her Taurus Wagooon several years back. Their website's sales area (long "tunnel", trucks up the middle, little desks along the sides) looks mighty familiar. I usually come up 152 on visitin' day, so I don't go past them.

Type "F" is not as slippery as the Mercon/Dextron... Probably 90% of the racers use F, I have it in both my Bird and the wifes '93 Grand Marquis with the AODE

Do you notice any temperature difference with the type F?

Your right I’m wrong; looked at my dip stick “and I feel like I dip stick, all I had to was look at that instead and I wouldn’t of had to ask.
Though mine says dexron II it’s also an 88’T-Bird.unless tranny don’t belong. Only the previous owner would now.
Now ill have to also ask the parts place unless type-f is just for P/S pumps.

I know to a lot of guys it was common practice to run type-F in there GM trannys at riverhead (circle track endures). They say if gives the car more grip and less slippage for overall more top end speed. Keep in mind we stay in low gear (1st) all race long.most trannys are GMs 350 or 400.
