I am trying to find the Vacuum Modulator for the cougar listed in the title. I have tried to find the modulator but it has eluded me.:flip: if there is someone out there that can tell me where it is i would appreicate it.
I'm not a 100% but didn't the 88- up cougar/birds have an electronic tranny?
OK, so I have the part from Schuck's and the Haynes manual neither of which say my automatic tranny is electronic NOR can I find where the transmission modulator even goes!! I've been wondering why I could buy the part if it's not even on my car!! Anyway, here's the full story...I inherited this car from an aunt who bought it brand new off the lot in 89. She was a hermit so when I got the car last year, it only had 42K on it and I've put it up to 58K or there abouts. Mechanic says my transmission is blown but I'm not buying it. Just had the transmission flushed abotu 2 months ago at a Ford dealership and they didn't spot anything unusual. When we had the car towed, it refused to downshift when moving form OD to D going uphill. Appears that R and 1 and 2 gears work, but not OD. THere was no thunderous bang, engine stall, funny smell, or nothing to indicate there was even a problem just a revving engine and no downshifting! My Dad says check the modulator but I can't find it...any other suggestions?
You're not finding the modulator, because there simply isn't one on these cars/transmissions.
You say you towed the car....and you DIDN"T disconnect the driveshaft!? :nono:
I'd say the OD band is toast...bummer dude
Might also check the linkage, and the TV rod/cable.
On my '88, the little rod popped off 2 different times, causing late shifts, and no OD gear on the highway (unless I was going at least 80)
That TV rod will cause the same symptom as a modulator, cause they do the same thing: controls shifts. Hope this helps ya out..let us know.
Yup, no vacuum modulator. The C-4 and C-6 have one, not the AOD.
Are we absolutely sure?

I believe (not sure) the A4LD uses one as well, but as stated above, the AOD does NOT use a vacuum modulator (yes, we're sure). As stated above, if you're having trouble with the shifts, check the TV cable attaching points at the throttle body.

Yep, the A4LD has one. On the right side of the trans. Gots me one in my ranger. not to happy with the trans but eh it works.
At least your car moves forward really good, with out going through a tank of gas. lol
