Ok, replaced the steering rack, got one piece bushings. The old one was two piece. Do I have to remove the metal sleeve on the car to use a the new bushings I have?
I have a new rack in the garage, I'll see what they gave me. btw its a Napa rack...............the bushings they gave me are one piece rubber with a steel center
It's prolly rusted in place. It's just a sleeve over a bolt.
Just get some 2-piece poly bushings...
The 1-piece bushings use a larger diameter bolt. The 2-piece use the sleeve to locate the rack and the smaller bolts to clamp it in place....a better design.
Mustang rack? Probably came with steel-sleeved Mustang-style bushings with gnarly teeth on one end to keep the rack from sliding around when it's bolted directly to the front of the cross-member (my brand-new in-the-box Motorsport rack was like that).
My 88 Bird had locating "tubes" welded to the cross-member that wouldn't go through the Mustang sleeved bushings, so I had to re-use the original big mushy 2-piecers.
In fact, here's somebody's k-member, showing the tubes...
.
No, the early cars used the fat bolts and the 1-piece bushings, the later cars used the 2-piece bushings with the long sleeves.
You can get poly replacements for either....
Cool. Yea i got the napa rack with the one piece units. I just picked up some two piece ones and they worked fine.
