I'm considering putting stock 88 5.0 Mustang headers on my 88 5.0 Cougar. Are there any modifications that need to be made or is it a simple case of replacing the exhaust manifolds with the headers. I ask because I am a little burned out after spending all weekend getting headers put on an old FE 360.
You're factory Y-pipe won't work without modification(good time for an upgrade to a H-pipe) and if you have a console shifter, you'll either have to modify the linkage or put in a floor shifter. This is definitely NOT an all weekend job...even if you do put in an H-pipe and an aftermarket floor shifter.
I have put these headers in a freinds t-bird, and they work okay. You may have to persuade the shifter linkage alittle bit. I didnt help him put the h-pipe on so I am not sure what he had to do with that.
I have the floorshifter and have already modified the exhaust from the manifold back. True duals, H-Pipe and Flowmasters. Having already done that, it's pretty much a "bolt-in" from there?
the exits of the manifolds, and the headers are in different spots. you are going to have to put on the headers, and mark where the new will have to be, then modify it accordingly. also, mustang shorties dont have o2 sensor provisions, so your flow tubes will have to be modified to fit them aswell.
