Title: Totally forgot to tell you all....Cody's & Hunter's experience last week
Post by: LittleAngel1198 on June 14, 2006, 02:19:06 PM
First, some background...
Years ago, the game commission set loose a bunch of turkey's to get the population up in this area. A few years later, they released coyotes to help manage the turkey population, as it was growing a lot.
Well, now we have a huge population of coyotes, so they have released a couple of Cougars to help handle them.

So, last week, on Thursday, it was really nice out and the boys wanted to go swimming at the gulf behind our house.  It's about a 3/4 mile walk to get back there, it's over a couple good sized hills, and through some woods.
So, on their way back home, Cody said he saw something brown in the path, it looked like a huge cat. As they got a little closer it took off running, and he got a good look at it...it was a young Cougar!

He said it was really scary but really exciting at the same time.

Anyway, they decided not to go back there swimming again unless an adult is with them.  But, they thought it was totally cool to have seen a Cougar so close.

there are a few around the Michigan area. Pretty neat to see wildlife coming back.

and hilarious how no one realize you can't introduce a species, but have to introduce an ecosystem... it is all one, you can't just have one piece!

lol:rollin:  The gaming commission just can't get their shtuff together--why not have just opened turkey season? When we lived in FL, I had a friend who hunts all kinds of legal game. He was tellin' me about out where his place is [in the FL boondocks] how they had outlawed gator hunting because they were being over-hunted and the #s dwindled. Then they let the ban go too long and the gators were coming back and searching out new territory because they're old ones were overpopulated, but now their new places were starting to make the human neighbors very uneasy. All I have to say is, didn't they see "Lake Placid"? ;)

PS Next time, ask one of the cougars to pose by one of your cougars for a photo op.

Sorry, he's currently unavailable--too busy filming a commercial for exercise equipment. Guess you'll have to see if Jackie Chan can step in :giggle:

Pirates.. pirates are the natural enemies of ninjas.

and they have hooks, so they can take on the cougars too.

Well...if there was a young cub around, mama cougar wasn't too far behind. The kids definitely got lucky. Normally a cougar will avoid humans but they have been known to actually track them when they need to hunt for food. They will circle the humans until the perfect attack opportunity arises. One way to avoid being attacked, though, is to make yourself appear larger than you are. Use a blanket, jacket, etc. and spread your arms out holding it, stand tall, get on a rock or in a tree, and make some noise. That usually frightens a cougar away.

Anyhow...glad to hear the kids are alright. That could have been a bad situation.

Thats how Eric scares away the Vert when spring comes around and he doesnt feel like driving it.;)  Kansas is as bad. But we dont have them, Wildlife and Parks denies their existence in Kansas. If someone catches one or kills one, its a large Bobcat.
