Title: tranny question
Post by: Master_xzavior on June 10, 2006, 09:01:31 PM
ok the question is which would be better?

here's the choices.

I have an AOD tranny that has god knows how many miles on it.  It still pulled good when I had it behind a 3.8. it didn't slip or anything like that.

On the other hand I may be able to dig up a different tranny . It's either a C4 or  C6  I don't remember exactly which it is. Both are 3 speeds if I remember correctly.

The difference is the C4or6  has been rebuilt and a shift kit was added. The tranny has had like maybe 6K miles put on it in the past since rebuild. The problem is I don't think I have a torque converter that would fit it unless the one from my 83 tbird will fit it.

Ok now the car has been converted to a 5.0 which I'm still working the bugs out of the conversion. I developed a hole in the AOD that was in the car. ( basically I accidentally drilled into the case long story)

My driving habits are pretty much normal but I do tend to get a heavy foot once in awhile. Most of my driving is done in town where I hardly ever used the OD gear anyway.

Ive heard a few people really down the AOD because its not as good as the C4 or C6 listening to them.  I'm eventually going to go with a T5 but thats a ways off yet.

Would it be better to put another AOD in or the 3 speed?  As far as the difference in miles on the two Im way ahead with the 3 speed.  Which would work better behind a 5.0 though?  As well as which would stand up to growing lead in your shoes occasionally?

My AOD has stood up so far but seems to be getting worn out. And now with the hole in it its pretty much shot.  The hole was temporarily repaired because it was maybe a 1/64th in. hole. But I think it may have hit something inside and is causing it to depressurize inside.

All in all which would be my better choice to hold up for the next year or so?

IF its a C4 and you don't mind loosing O/D then go for it. Rather than a unknown get you a cheap B&M 2000 stall converter and have fun. Folkes bad mouth them, but my buddy Ronnie(chrome302jr), used one with a bunch of nitrous passes and it never skipped a beat..

IF its a C6 forget it, those SOBs are BIG and HEAVY...

Me, I'll always run a AOD... A good one with a shift kit will take quite a bit of abuse...

c4's are great! I ran one in my 200 capri, and still would run on the highway @ 3300 rpm (70 ish mph) and the thing was a rock after a good rebuild.

aod's are nice, but can be a bit mushy with out a good rebuild and shiftkit but aren't as weak as alot of guys claim, no tranny with 150K will take abuse on a track with out some work.

I don't even want to know how you drilled INTO your tranny ON ACCIDENT :P

well the accident was actually the depth of drilling. The drilling itself was on purpose. Let's just say that little pin that holds the shifter in place wasnt cooperating the way I wanted it to.

And I know the mileage of the two pretty much makes it a no brainer on choosing, except for the fact that if one of the others are alot weaker I dont want to swap to something that I could still break with the same amount of effort.

So now I guess the big question is how do I tell a difference between a C4 and a C6?  Alot of times its a pan difference  or a bellhousing shape difference or the little vacuum thingy's shape I forgot what that things called. anyway whats the difference in these 2?

C4 has a removable bellhousing.... C6 it is part of the case like a AOD...

C6's generally have BB bellhousings iirc and i think you mean the vacum modulator?
