Title: At the sign of the Cat...
Post by: pro-five-oh on June 09, 2006, 10:52:25 PM
Check out the article one of my fellow writers at The Truth About Cars wrote about the next Cougar that Ford idiotically has yet to create.

I think it covers all the bases, even addresses the fact that Ford could very well badge engineer the new one just like they did in the 70s (and the 80-90s, but to a lesser extent).

Let's see... virtually every car magazine, countless websites, even more numerous fans (including most users of this website) and now your colleague are calling on Ford to build a Mustang-based Cougar. Dodge and GM both seem to be able to figure out that there is enough room in the market for more than just the Mustang. Virtually everyone agrees that doing so would be a no-brainer. And yet, inexplicably, Ford refuses to oblige. I think it pretty much proves that Ford itself is a no-brainer...

I completely agree that Mercury needs a better line of cars than they have now. But what was not mentioned was the fact that Ford would be too worried about a fall in slaes of the Mustang if they did make a Cougar.

Ford doesn't want any more competion for the Mustang than it already has let alone competion from its little brother company, Mercury.

I don't see then making the Cougar and I do see Murcury going the way of certain other lines, Plymouth, Olds.....

I read somewhere that all future Mercury models names would start with M. and they would drop the Grand from Grand Marquis so it would be in line with the new policy.

Haven't you noticed that all the Ford car models now start with F?

Focus, Fusion, Five Hundred?

How about the trucks: Ecscape, Explorer, Expedition and the late Excursion?

Ford learn the lesson very lately...

Remember this , from the Lee Iaccocca book:

"I had a very good  deal with Mr. Honda. His factory can provide us 300,000 powertrains a year , at 711 usd (1970´s) . It´s a no-brainer ! Would you imagine that ? 711 usd for a engine and a transmision in a box ready to drop in any car we want ! i was on fire to tell Henry Ford, this gonna be the next mustang ! but when i told henry about the deal, he said "Never a Ford car would have a puppies engine inside!" and that was the way we lost a big deal "

Now, count the years since then, how many Ford cars now have a puppiespanese engine....

It´s typical from Ford, ruining the best deals for them, nothing new for me....
