Title: Sits High Up Front?
Post by: sansabar on June 07, 2006, 06:53:02 AM
I'm the new owner of an '88 Cougar 5.0 LS.  47K original miles - literally bought new and driven by an old lady.  The car is in like new/stock condition except for the exhaust mod I made after the purchase.
My question is about how high the car seems to sit up front.  Is this normal for these cars?

It's more than likely your rear is sagging. Pics would help if you got 'em.

Could be.  The reason I mentioned the front looking raised is the space between the tire and the wheel well seems too much where as in the back it looks normal.

Semi-luxury car, heavy V8, soft springs, gotta keep it high so it doesn't bottom out and spill the Champagne.

Stock height, probably all 4 fingers fit between the tire and fender.
Lower it a bit, the tire seems more "centered" in the hole.

Kind of dark, but here's a Ford promo pic of an 88...

That's the look.  It may be normal but I don't like that look.  Maybe when I make the move to 15" it will have a more centered appearance.
I guess I could always gain a lot of weight . . .

Yeah, I've been thinking about cutting 1/2 coil of off my front springs...seems like with just two small socket sets and jumper cables, the rear still sags a little.

Cutting springs is a bad idea - it messes up the geometry of the front end while increasing the load on the struts, bushings, etc. which are all engineered for the stock spring.

The spring may also become noisy while driving which really is annoying.

Nope. I have 17s and it actually looks worse.

Your 17's have a low profile tire.  What's the overall tire height?
