Question: How do you cruise around?
Title: Am I the last person on earth....
Post by: slamedcat on June 04, 2006, 01:59:39 AM
to cruise around with the windows down. I was out tonight and nobody had their windows down. It was like 68* out. Is that considered too cold. The other day it was 80 something and everyone had their windows up.

Have we become a civilization based on nothing but creatur comfort. I have had one car with A/C and can count on one hand how many times I used it.

It just seams like nobody is happy no matter the temp outside. Its 80* its too hot. Its 79* it too cold. Come on people fresh air isn't going to hurt you.

I like to cruise with the windows down (since my AC has been out for the last 3 years). :)  But honestly, that's the whole reason I never got it fixed.  I like riding around with the windows down.

Dude, you don't even know how sick it makes me to see people rolling around in nice 70 degree weather with convertible top up, windows up and air on full blast.  A bunch of cooches, I say.  I'm so jealous that there was no production, or aftermarket, even, version of my t-bird.  It makes me mad that people buy a convertible only to put the top down a few times a year.

When I get the Dodge 600 Convertible sitting out in the garage fixed, I'll be out on 50 degree days with the top DOWN!

I must admit, though, now that I have my FIRST car with working A/C I do tend to take advantage of it.  My neon, though, doesn't even have a nice sunroof, so I can't enjoy the weather as much as I'd like.  I'd say it's about 70/30 AC/Windows Down for me.

Thats what got me to thinking about this was the other day I was driving behind a 600 series BMW. Top up windows up and the little weiner behind the wheel with his 3 piece suit on. It was mid 80's that day.

So I started looking around and noticed 95% of the people had the windows up. I mean live a little you may get a little sweaty but have some fun use your car for what it was ment to be used for. Put the top down, open that sun roof, roll those windows down. Whats better than rolling up to a stop light and the guy next to you reving the engine, or them saying what a nice ride you have.

I can see some people using it, like people in arizona. But hell, windows that roll down are for cooches. Right now I have two electric window doors on a car that came with hand rollers. And it gets to 95 or so recentally. Then again I also wear a trench coat all day every day but yeah.

When driving the T-Bird or Volvo I use the A/C religiously, and I love it. I prefer the sound of the stereo to the sound of wind buffeting in open windows. The only exceptions are when I'm driving around town on a day that isn't too hot  - not moving fast enough for open windows to be noisey, not hot enough that even the moving air can't cool me. I also use open windows a lot in spring, just because I'm so happy to be able to :D When it's hot the windows (and in the Volvo, the sunroof) stay firmly closed. Opening the window just a crack with the A/C on causes the temp in the car to rise by probably 20 degrees...

My beater (88 Dakota 4X4) doesn't have that luxury so whenever I drive it I have the windows down, and with the home renovations combined with the unreliable Volvo I've been driving it a lot lately. One nice thing it has that I wish they still put in cars is vent levers - you pull the lever and fresh air enters the car through the dash, without having to turn on the fan.

The T-Bird is a million times nicer to drive, plus has such luxuries as A/C and a stereo, but a 4X8 sheet of drywall simply won't fit, much less 20 4X8 sheets... :hick:

Haystack: That machismo of yours must come in really handy for toll booths and drive-thru windows. You must feel some manly as you coast slightly past the change bucket and strain to lean out the half open door to toss your change in or while trying to grab your Big Mac combo while trying to prevent falling out of the car (if operating windows are for cooches, you must really loath those girly seat belts...). I'm sure the people behind you in line must be really jealous of your nonfunctioning windows as well.

BTW, according to the DOT, the driver's window has to open. It can be power or manual, can roll up/down or be a slider, or can even open with a zipper or snaps, but it has to open. It's required for safety inspection in most areas that have such inspections as well.

Im not sure about cars, but in trucks, DOT requires both withdows to open.

windows down for this guy. my wife learned real fast to always have a ponytailer on hand when ridin with me!
only time the A/C is on(in the vehicles that have A/C, TC not included:flip: ) is if we are goin somplace nice and hafta be dressed up.

other than that, especially if i am jus out cruisin, the windows are down. if its a lil too cold, the heater is on. if its too hot/humid, then ill run the A/C. but it takes alot for me to break down:nono:

I just got my rejection letter from PA Penn-Dot on my classic plates because my pictures had the windows down. I guess they wanted the windows up (still can't find where in the directions that mentioned windows had to be up) GUess I'll send it back in like they requested.
Window's down all the time here....

All the time, even with little rain, the cougar had the windows down...
In the explorer i drive with all the windows down, open sunroof and little air (with a/c off) from the blower...

The only times I regret not having AC is when it's over 90 outside. Then it's just a little too hot for open windows.

Any time it's between 50* and 84* the windows are down. If not all the way down but down. 85* and up the a/c is on. Now if I have to wear a suit or something for a weading the a/c is on so I don't get all full of sweet before I dance:hick: . Besides with the windows down I can enjoy the burble of the exhaust:D . Oh and if anyone's interested a 5.0 can spin the tires from a stop with the a/c on. Don't ask why I know;)

If I'm in the Bird it's windows down. NEVER had a bird with A/C and don't plan on it. If I'm in the Focus/Accord it really depends on who's in the car. Since my son can't ride in the front of those cars b/c of airbags I have to run the A/C if it's too hot out. And since he's in the back he gets a face full of wind, lol. Personally I hate A/C, it dries out my skin and I feel like a cardboard box all day.

i love to drive with the windows down. and sometimes if it's to hot in the car and the wind isnt enough. i'll turn the ac on and keep the windows down. i do that in the work truck all the time for when i catch a light.

but if im so hot and need to cool off for a min or 2 windows up. unless rain they stay up till i slow down or it slows down. but on them real humid days A/c

Screw AC. My Cougar has no AC. And with the Escape, it is much cooler and more gas effecient to ride with the windows down, and the subs blaring. Hey it even gets me stares outside the fact that I drive a Yellow SUV. Unless I'm sweating and parched of thirst, I turn it off.

You will not see me drivig with the windows all the way up ever.  The fumes from the exhaust leak make me sick.  If it's cold out, heat is on.  Too hot out, a/c is blasting (when it works), but the windows always gotta be cracked at least.

I hate A/C for that reason exactly. I have noticed that for along time now. Everyone and there brother has there windows up with the A/C on in the summer. Hell even when its kinda cold out I still have my windows all the way down and just turn the floor heat on and it always keeps it comfortable for a great cruise...When its colder than shiznit out my heats on but the window is still open a good 2-3 inches....

Guess I'm kinda in the minority here then - I spent close to $600 fixing the A/C in my car when I first got it (all new lines & hoses, new receiver/dryer, new condenser) and will likely spend another $300 this year or next (new compressor - the current one is getting noisey). I will never again have a DD without A/C. Winter or woods beaters don't need it, but the DD gotta be refrigerated

I never had working A/C in the Cougar nor did I see a reason for it. 2 windows, moonroof opened, it was great, except in heavy downpours.

Now I have the Tib as my daily and I must say that it is nice to have the option to turn the A/C on. It's nice not to have my shirt stick to my sweaty back which always happend on really hot days on the Cougar's leather seats. If I'm outside all day in the heat, it's nice to have the A/C to cool me off on the ride home. I have my windows down most of the time though. Especially if the car is clean (Don't ask me why).

i run windows down on my way to work when its nice and cool outside and windows up after working in a shop in 90* or hotter weather all day. i ran windows down quite a bit more b4 my passenger side stopped working again. i also run windows down a couple inches in the winter because the slight cold brease is nice. in my truck i run windows down rear window open and foot vents open. ac is a car thing.

I like my a/c..........  no choking on exhaust in rush hour ride, or listening to every pinheads way to loud stereo and  exhaust for me.  I franky think  the stench of the boston rush hour fumes would make anyone roll the windows up.

Your not alone Thunderchicken

My car has an open wastegate dump so I need the windows down when boosting, plus I need to listen for detonation when boosting.  I have no A/C, so unless it's too cold the windows are down, and even then I roll them down some when necessary.  I like being in touch with everything around me, I like being able to hear when a car is near me, and my car is louder than most anyone's stereo or their exhaust, and I like to hear my exhaust, so there's another reason.  My A/C was leaking down so I ditched it over a year ago, and I don't really miss it.

in the cobalt, it have the windows up when doing 80 on the highway, but as soon as I slow down the windows are down, even when it's pretty hot out, the a/c is on, but windows are down when not on the highway. Just like the fresh air. Hell even on the highway it is normally cracked and the air isn't on, just the fan blowing.

i answered windows down, cause when "cruising" it is always windows down, enjoying the drive.

I don't understand that logic. We all know that the ability to roll down your windows in the springtime is a rite of passage, the transition between cold weather and allergy season. ;)

It really all depends on where you live. Those in the South absolutely need working a/c. Those in the North and in Canada can usually survive without it, but it's nice to have it working. I honestly cannot figure out why our cars have the uncanny ability to lose freon in the blink of an eye. It's extremely rare to buy a Fox Cougar with working a/c and if you do, it's because someone already went through the headache (and expense) of having it fixed. I don't want to say it's a junk system...but sheesh, 30-year-old GM beaters have better working systems than we do. In a lot of ways, it's not our fault that we have sub-par systems but we do have to deal with them at some point if we want them to work. And honestly, some people would sink more money into getting the a/c system fixed than they paid for the car!

I've lived with not having working a/c in a Fox car for many years. Maybe 15 or so. I survived. When I had the T-Bird, my cousin converted it over to R-134 for me. That lasted a few years, then it leaked out, and I got lazy and never had it recharged. That car had the flaky ATC system, though, and it just didn't work the way it should have. The a/c in the Mountaineer works great though.  it is nice to have a daily driver with working a/c! I found out this past weekend on a road trip just how much I really missed having it. So yeah...now that it's back, I will definitely dedicate myself to keeping it working.

It all boils down to, do you need it, or can you live without it? If you want it, or need it, spend the money and get it done the right way. Otherwise, it's 260 air.

(BTW...there's nothing that says 'summertime' better to me than to see a hot chick driving with the windows up, a/c CRANKED, and her hair blowing around as if the windows were down). ;)

Purchased car in October of '02:  $1,400

Had A/C repaired in September of '05: $1,200

So, naturally, I want to get my money's worth out of the A/C system.  I use it quite often.

My ranger has AC neither car has. My 90 I just bought was converted to R134 but I have since taken everything out minus the compressor so I dont have to worry about a belt yet. But going to get one today lol.

I have no choice in the matter. Both power window motors are dead on the Mark, and the truck's A/C doesn't work. Fortunately it (the truck) has the extra vent windows, the rear sliding window, and an extra vent down by the high beam switch on the floor.

Wow, just a rebel all over the place huh?
Why those silly laws about windows working, seatbelts and oh yeah...having the correct plates on the correct vehicle! Yep, those must be for all the wimps out there who like to obey the law.

Dude, if you haven't got the money to plate your car, then why the hell are you driving it?  Oh, let me guess, you don't have insurance on it either?

Of course it would have benn the Il plates on the car and no tinted windows too.

Hey I'm in Arizona right now :) It's nice out!  104 today ;)

Actually it's kinda like that nice dry heat you get when you open the over door?  Except it's not nearly as intense.  For some reason my A/C doesn't work on the cutlass, so 4x80 is my a/c system.

I took the A/C out of the Demon a couple of years ago.  When I first got the car it had no R-12 in the system due to a bad seal.  I never used it anyway so I yanked the system out.  I don't mind no A/C but, the wife absolutely hates no A/C anytime it's above 85 or so.

For me it's really more of a style vs. substance issue. While I love that wind blown feeling on a sunny day, I am cursed with thin, fine hair and not much of it. So unless I'm going home or don't care how I look, it's gotta be cruisin' with the A/C. I would love the just blown feelin' if it wasn't so messy! ;)

I do that in the winter here sometimes, you get some strange looks. I always have my windows down. I think it comes from never having a vehicle with working AC. Hell my ranger dont even have AC, and the Blazers is gonna get removed since the compressor ped out when I went to see if it worked.

I've never really had a strong desire for the AC to work in any of my cars. I prefer having the windows down in the summer.
Hell, my '96 has perfect AC and I rarely use it. I'll run it once a week or so to keep everything in working order.
