i recently bought my 87 TC to begin a project. i am currently livin in an apt and cannot easily do major car work. the plan was to rent some space to work on it. then we decided to move. our new place has a 2 car garage, YAY!! :headbang:
heres the problem; i got a car, and a stack of parts but no place to work on it and we dont move till the 24th. :brick:
lookin for some help. maybe if i can talk about my project, i wont feel so bad about not gettin to work on it...
so heres the list of parts i have to throw at it, feel free to discuss
front:
tubular k-memeber/control arms
bilsteins from 03 cobra with 400lbs coilover kit
04 13" cobra brakes
poly bushings everywhere
CC plates
strut tower brace
rear:
modded 99 cobra IRS
poly diff bushings
delrin control arm bushings
00 cobraR springs
bilsteins from 03 cobra
drivetrain:
lots of goodies for the 2.3T
ploy motor mounts
poly tranny mount
poly tranny crossmember bushings
other misc:
6 pt cage
thru floor SFC's
still need to gather a few odds and ends parts for final assesmbly, but all the big parts are present and accounted for. now if i can jus get moved then i can start :sawzall: and :welder:
so, i am gumby, and im a addicted to modding. anyone wanna help me pass some time thru group therapy?:screwy:
Hey how are you planning on getting the IRS to work? I have heard it is almost impossible.
i have a sticker on my tool box that reads as follows:
"those who say it can't be done shouldn't fornicate with the guy doin it!"
im not plannin on a bolt-on install, but impossible??? man i love to hear that. got any more info on why
they say its so difficult?
its designed on a completely different chassis dsign lol i'm glad your doing something different rather than the typical tc rear/5.0L swap though, good luck!
well i know a fox is a fox, is a fox, unless youre workin on a t-bird, but i wouldnt call the SN95(fox4) a completely different chassis.:toilet:
the irs WILL fit fine, tis been done many a time in fox stangs....
sounds like a sweet project guy! keep us updated!
Thats what I thought,... But I guess people lie or something.
It's no small task, but it can be done. I'm planning the IRS out back as well. I've looked at a Cobra's setup and got scared...lol...so good luck to ya.
how about taking before and after pictures? when i had a parts buildup i was waiting to install, i had everything orginized, excell spread sheats, constantly researching parts and things i may need. if i could do it again, id have more pictures.
i think most are more scared of the unknown.
nate - you should see my notebook :giggle: it has three different lists in it to try and keep everything within my budget.
things i NEED to get it back on the road
things that would be nice before it gets back runnin the first time
things i really want, but will probly hafta wait till a later date.
theres also pages of notes i have collected from researchin different parts and interchanges
there will be plenty of pics before, during, and after the build up, not to worry. most everything is packed up for the move already, but the pics i have so far are here:

Yeah, Cobra IRS will bolt into a Fox Mustang (uses the control arm pickup points on the chassis on the '99-04 Cobras after all), so you'll need some slight tweaks to make up for the slight differences in length between the cars, but otherwise it should go right in.
BTW- That's a definitely pile of parts you're throwin at that thing!
Yes, living in an apartment sux. Even if i wanted to tear my engine out and rebuild it i'd have to lug it up a set of stairs! i even got a spare car to take the T-bird off the road but i just don't have the space or a garage to do it! And i doubt the landlord wants a t-bird on jackstands leaking fluids and taking up space.
It's cool that you found a place to fix your need. I too know what that need is. Mine is mostly money though. I got all the ideas i need but i'm lacking a bunch of GOFAST parts.
haha, i carried a T5 up three flights once and rebuilt it in the kitchen. this was in a tech college provided apt, though.
i cant even have a non-runnin vehicle on the property here. not supposed to change my oil in the parkin lot either....
man i cant wait to move!
I know about the modding addiction....trust me. :hick:
Once you get settled in the new place I'm sure you'll be going hog wild.
You always have to live on the total opposite side of town though. :p
I bet we could work out a deal for an extra pair of hands a couple days in exchange for dragging a car back from NC ;)
looks almost like my yard with that late 70s ford truck and white tc lol. i got a blue 79 f250 and my tc clone car.
yeah, those pics came from the guy i bought the car from.
chuck - im sendin ya a PM
man, that sounds like one tc that will tear up the road courses.
keep us appraised.
lol, at least i'm not the only one. i've got notebooks, spreadsheets, word docs, and random items that i wrote on. and they change almost every friggin day. :)
actually now that I see the mounting points of the IRS, it doesn't look AS intimidating as previously...
see? its not THAT scary. jus the unknown factor gettin to everyone. like workin on a deisel. not difficult, jus different/unknown.
i cant wait to get started, and let all you guys know how it goes:D
lol on time i had an engine on a stand in my bedroom my dad came home that night and was like " wtf are you entierly retarded or just dont know how to turn on ur brain , we have a garge for that kinda shiznit" then i was like " but dad you always seam to getin my way or f*** with my stuff " then i got an oil stain on my carpet and my mom kicked my ass
Z
Actually after readin this site (http://"http://www.mouthbreather.net/IRSSWAP.HTML") it REALLY doesn't seem too bad.
It's not all that hard.....Things are close enough and you can fab anything that isn't. I do possibly see the Tbird gas tank being in the way....you may need to go fuel cell. I thought about it in mine just to make some more room. I don't have the small TC tank...I have the big 5.0 tank in the car (22gal I think).
Yeah, it's kinda like when you don't know anything about cars and you look in the engine bay and all you see is a sea of "stuff" merged together. Then one day you wake up and you see all the individual parts and whatnot and how they work together and you're like... ooooh. Well that's basically what just happened with the IRS. The "oh" moment. lol. :D
Your "moment of clarity" ;)
yeah, i think the tank my be the only big hold up. i wont be sure until i actually hang it in there the first time though.
glad i could help bring things into focus for ya darkthunder;)
that doesn't look that bad.. wow. I thought it would be harder..
are you going to add subframe connectors? stiffen it up a bit down there?
yeah, there will be SFC's and other chassis stiffening equipment. see original post;)
oh you mean where you say you will have sfc's and a roll cage. yah. i didn't go back and read it cause i am lazy :P heheh.. that will be one bad machine.
