ok i am new here and i also know that this 95 is a little different than the 88 back but here goes. got a 95 cougar with a bad 3.8 have a 93 exploder with a bad tranny how hard would it be to install the 4.0 out of the sploder into the cougar?
Isn't the 4.0 completely different from the 3.8?
I know they used it in Rangers. It's probably similar to the 3.0 they used.
The 4.0 is a 60-degree V6 and is completely different than the 3.8. Its bellhousing is different than the 3.8, so you'd need the Explorer tranny (or one from a Ranger). Of course you'd also need custom mounts and a whole lotta wiring...
The 4.0 is a Cologne block (2.6/2.8/2.9/4.0). As said, you would need a different trans, make some motor mounts, and rewire that sucker....
Oh and trust me from experience. WIRING BLOWS :shoothead
what trans would be in the cougar? i dont suppose i could get lucky and it be an a4ld could i?
no baddis.... the cougar in 95 is the 4R70W full electronic 4-speed automatic with overdrive. that information is curtousy of coolcats.net :-) hope that helps.
...And having an A4LD would not make you "lucky" :yuck:
And having any Explorer transmission would make you lucky (4r44e, 4r55e or 5r55e, those suck even if they had more or less gears).......
I´ve heard the 4.0 is nearly as bulletproof like the 4.9 litre iniline six, but has the wrong tranny, and trust me, 160 Hp is not worth the hard work it involves....
just looking at the parts i had. didnt want to do a rebuild but i guess i'll do a blown 3.8 n/a motors are no fun
guess the 4.0 will go in the ranger
Hey, since somebody brought it up, what tranny does my '99 Explorer Limited have with AWD and a 5.0? I can't trust the door tag because it's a rebuild and the doors came from another Explorer. I always thought it had a 4R70W. I'm just curious.
Fordman3
4R70W Code U (1996-1997 5.0 Explorer) 4-speed
5R55E Code D (1997-) 5-Speed
