Title: My first NEW store bought computer...
Post by: TurboCoupe50 on May 28, 2006, 03:40:59 PM
Been building them in the past(over 5 years ago to be exact).
Gettin tired of this old AMD 500mhz machine... The wifes twin to this one had started giving all kind of strange errors(even with fresh HD and windows install). Wound up giving her the AMD 900 I got at the Salvation Army Store, it runs rings around this one...
So I bought the CHEAP Dell B110(had a 22% off sale last week)... Deleted the monitor and added a CD/DVD+/-RW drive... Oh yea opted for the XP reinstall disc.. Should be good enough for what I use a computer for...
Haven't got it yet, should be here in a couple of days...

Boooo, intel sucks an ass!
Ok, now that I got that out of the way.... Dell's are pretty much the best deal you can get on pre-built systems. I think it was ThunderChicken that said this, and I believe it's true, that you couldn't build a computer with the same specs for the prices they offer them at. My brother got one for xmas a year or two ago and it's run pretty good since. His indescretionary clicking and installing junk programs has since clogged it up, but it's had no hardware failures, except for the flat panel monitor being garbled every now and then.

Just for future refrance, alot of emachines computers are alot cheeper then the parts, and they dont have any specific parts like dell's power supply. They used to have a 3400+ 64bit for around $400. Been a while since I priced them though.
Still, a computer is a computer. See if you can ditch xp for 2000. It speeds things up rediculously. Man I cant spell.

One thing I hate about oem computers like dell, sony etc is all the software they load up on them to make em look like they got alot of software..
15 min after I took my sony vaio laptop out of the box I formated and reinstalled xp pro..

well my father owns a computer business and i know how hard it is to compete with company's like dell that can offer those low prices.... but dell is bout the best bang for the buck... but when ever we order in new computer systems for people.... we clean them. and we ordered an HP in and it took 45 mins just to clean off all the they put on it..... thats just one of the things i dislike bout em... and two..... intel processers BLEH lol AMD :-D

Werd. I hate all the ware that comes preinstalled - when you start the computer the taskbar has about a dozen icons in it. I've formatted the HD on every factory built computer I've ever owned (two Dells and a Gateway) as soon as I took 'em out of the box

The one previous to the AMD 500 was a Cyrix 200(still have it, acutally had it on line 3-4 days ago.....sloooow), intel is the next logicial step Dr Spock...:rollin: :rollin:
Just checked the UPS site and it's on the truck for delevery today, should be here between 4 & 6pm if he comes at the usual time. Figuring he could be late though, as yesterday was a holiday... Just cleared the desk of the old unit, gotta use the wifes if I want to post.
Yea I figuring the factory software may last through the first couple of hours.... Lookout, I may just just stick win ME on it(or at least another HD with it installed)... You guys can dis ME if you like, but it works for me...

Dell does some weird stuff sometimes in terms of pricing. You gotta wonder where these computers are being assembled. Last month, I ordered my parents a new Dell with a 19" LCD flat panel monitor for $349 +tax + $29 shipping. The only bad thing is the Celeron processor, but since the computer is only used for the internet nobody cares...

.... Now you tell me.... :flip: :rollin:
I paid $295 + $29 ship + tax($340) for this one with NO monitor... It does have a DVD burner though... I do have a decent 19" crt monitor I like, so I'm happy. I bought this one on the spur of the moment 22% off, 22nd anniversery sale, yadda yadda... If you watch, I sure there are better deals every now and then...
I basically just use it for net surfin', listnen to a little music, and now I can burn some DVDs, so the Celeron is fine with me... It loads pages way faster than the 500 AMD. I often waited 10-15 seconds for a ebay page to load( even with a cable connection), with this one its almost instant. The 500 used to be faster, don't know what its issue was(maybe we're just loading larger pages these days??? any thoughts???). I even installed another HD with fresh windows install, it booted much faster but still dragged ass on a lot of sites... The Wifes 900 AMD loads pages so much faster, I basically got pissed and bought this 2.5g Celeron... Both the AMDs have 256meg memory and run the same copy of ME(piss on microsoft)... Guess I'm legal now since this has the XP.

I actually recommended a Dell with the Celery proc to my sister. She only uses her computer for surfing and IM-ing, so why should she pay for the extra power?
Myself, I only use mine for surfing, but I couldn't bring myself to buying a celery - to me it would be like buying a V6 'Bird :D I don't need the extra power of the AMD 64 4000+ I'm running in the laptop, but I do need the bragging rights :D

Thats kinda like swapping in a v-8 and never mashing down on the gas.
I am kinda reffering to a dial up connection........
Anyways, the problems with the laptops are power consumption and a py video card most of the time.

Actually, it's more like buying a Ferrarri and only being able to use it in retirement communities where the speed limits are 25MPH. Believe me, if high speed were available in the area I just moved to I'd jump on it in a heartbeat.
As for power consumption, I get about three hours between charges on the battery, and with this Athlon 64 chip it doesn't get nearly as hot as my old Dell P-4 laptop (the cooling fan barely ever comes on). For video it's got ATI Mobility Radeon X600 with 256MB discreet memory. Whether that's state-of-the-art I dunno, but I do know it's better than the Intel Integrated graphics the Dell had, and it's certainly enough to play 80's video games using MAME...

Why do you think you can get a Dell so cheap? All of those companies pay Dell to have their software come pre-installed on every system they ship. There are a lot of brand new computers I've worked on that run slower than my five year old Athlon because of all the software that's installed on them.

Dells are way worth the price, exspecially because EVERY machine comes with XPsp2 home at the minimum. they are decent machines and run fairly good.
I still build all my own though. I just enjoy it, though I do have several old dells i've brought home from work.

I think xpsp2 is a hack. Its just an easy way for microsoft to make it deeper into your computer.

Which is why, half-way through my install of XP-SP2 I cancelled and changed it out for my win2k cd.

win2k spk4 is basically the same thing. Anything after the new frame.net or what ever that thing is.

.net framework. and you can turn all that shiznit off. sp2 is pretty nice for how bloated it is, but you can really strip it down.
I am just waiting for my vista beta...
