I've still been pushing along to get this thing running for CJ.
Finally got the battery....
A couple shots with one showing the size.
It weighs 25#. I could have gone with the smaller one again (13#), but I figure with the extra distance and such (going behind the pass seat), the extra "oomph", would be good, and it's still 1/2 the weight of most std batteries.
Now a couple engine shots..
At this point I'm holding off on the IC so I can just get the thing on the road. Adding it later will be no biggie. The engine bay will get cleaned up and painted when I do the engine swap to the X-Flow, so it will have to suffice as is for the time being. I'll need more things I'm sure after it's running, but this will be good enough for now...I just want it to move under it's own power again.
Just a couple more things on the list to get it running..
-A couple silicone couplers to finish the intake tubing(ordered)
-Alternator tension bracket
-battery mounted
-rework fan relay wiring for MS control
-reflash the MS with the updated code and get it mounted in the car (wiring is all in ....)
-cooling lines (I could bypass the heater core to get it running, but probably will just get it done right the first time.)
Then it's cross-you-fingers time.....
what!!!! no intercooler ;)
Eventually ;) Have cores...just need some material to make the tanks...
An inline intake? Interesting.
Your O2 housing is also rather interesting. Center mount header?
Yup a center mount (From Bob Lee)

The intake is a mild port and smoothed out. Once I decided on the X-Flow swap, I wasn't as concerned with tweaking this to the hilt...and I'm also just using the inline intake to be obstinant...
yay for progress. someone oughta be makin some, im sure not...
you, obstinant??:giggle:
i think the inlines look better anyhow. i have no comment on which will make more power. i might try one sometime to find out.
That has got to be one of the nicest Turbo Coupes I've seen. Even though you don't have the intercooler it'll probably run pretty hard;) .
Ok Turbo Coupe replica;)
Very Nice man. That's not a stock turbo is it?
I'm diggin your underhood goodies!
Nope. It's a J/Y hybrid. may work, may not....we'll see :hick:
Nice setup, that battery is tiny. I thought it was huge at first until you put your hand up there... less you have world's largest hand. :D BTW, how much does it weigh?
What parking lot tire scrub?
Tha battery is about 7" square (or I guess "cubed"):hick:
It's 25#.
Only when you're doing under 55 or so. :giggle:
Cool. Wait? Is it... daily driver friendly?
I used the smaller version (13#) as a daily in my 2.3T Ranger for over a year, and I had had it for a year or two in the Tbird before that. It started the truck all winter and the only time I had to jump it was a -10*... I just opted for the slightly larger one since the battery was no longer going to be in the engine bay, so I wanted a little more CCA.
A couple quick shots of the turbo intake tube I fabbed up this past weekend..
The biggest thing to do now is get the coolant lines sorted... I'll also probably break out the laptop this weekend and get the code reflashed and download the new .msq file.
bad ass.. not as bad ass as the X-flow will be, but bad as none the less..
should move pretty good.
I prefer the inline intakes looks also.. something about pipe in an engine bay makes it look faster...
-nice, is that a SHO motor on your stand behind the dp? whats up with that??
Yup...it's a SHO motor....
For more details on what I'm doing with that see HERE (http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?t=6535) (Make any comments on the SHO swap here :D)
The only thing that's changing is the car it's going into....the 84 XR-7 is probaby going away due to cancer...so there will be another Fox it will be going into.
Right now I'm at the point of needing an engineless Fox car at my place so I can sort out motor mounts. The engine/trans mating is pretty well dialed in.
I have my Capri set up with the small version, and its been working fine as a DD. I went this way to avoid all the hassel of a rear mount in a hatch car.

Bob Myers
-theyre far off from you, but i do have a couple of '88 tc shells w/no engine/trans if you need one of them.......
Oh I have a chassis...just need to get it here ;)
looking good cant wait to see it completed.
Here's what I think, Chuck:
Well....the MS ECU is flashed and the new .msq loaded.
I have just bypassed the heater core for the time being...it's 90*...so I don't think I'll need it just yet.
Aside from fixing a small coolant leak in the lower intake where I have the coolant sensor (evidently my buddy's AL TIG job is not 100%) and hooking up the PCV valve....the next picture may be of a running engine.....
Looking Good
Well I said that the next pic may be of a running engine...
Hard to tell but it is running.:hick:
I now have the problem of my turbo oil seal decided to take a dump...and it doing just that ...dumping oil out the exhaust.:yuck:
Aside from a couple minor MS issues (tach and fuel system prime) it seems ok.
I can't fix the others until I get the turbo sorted since I just pulled it off the car.
It runs though :D
with your setup you should be able to swap in a TO4E pretty easily they are pretty cheap on ebay
Well I don't know if it's the seal or something else. I did a DIY hybrid with my good T3 I had on the car previously.
My return line might be too small, and is restricting flow. Never had a problem with it previously though.
That's part of the thrash I guess Chuck...build it, check it, re-build it...looking good though. That belt looks like it doesn't have much of a wrap on any of those pulleys...lol...think it'll slip at all???
The belt set-up is similar to what I had on my 2.3T Ranger. Never had issue one in regards to belt slipage over the course of the year I drove it as a daily.
Well, after taking the turbo apart, I think the oil issue might be my drain line
(http://www.turbochuck.com/images/Tbird/oil%20return.JPG)
It's only -8AN, but has been fine on 2 cars over the past 7 years or so. This had been with the stock feed line, so apparently the new -4AN feed line flows a bit much for this.
I've got some -10AN hose and adapters, so I just need a couple straight hose ends and that's set.
-the day mine runs again, neighbors will call the law because some idiot in the neighborhood is running around screaming at the top of his lungs..............
Ok, progress made, some lost.
I installed the -10AN return hose, and the result was unchanged. Then I remembered something I did Sat right before it started puking. The breather hole in the v/c is open at the moment...so I plugged it with something. Shortly thereafter, the oil issue started. So I pulled that out and the oil issue lessed. I can't tell if it stopped all the way as it's still buring oil out of the pipes. This engine hasn't run in 1-1/2 years, and I'm not sure if I have a blowby issue, or just need to plumb that into the PVC hose to get a better vaccum on the crackcase.
What this means is with that plugged, I apparently as having some crankcase pressurization issues...which was prohibiting the oil to drain into the block.... I'll see what happens with a couple fittings and some more hose for the PCV.
I need to tweak my throttle cable bracket. It's not allowing the TB to close all the way. Not a big deal.
My alternator doesn't appear to be charging. At first I thought it was because I had forgotten to tighten the cable on the alt..but that didn't help. It's a 3G, so maybe a regulator or something. Didn't look too close. Only getting 12.4V while running.
Tach still does not work....I need to just run a new wire from the coil to the tach and see if that is the issue. I have tach readings on the MT.
Somehow the run-on prime issue has solved itself. I was shutting down the MT and had to turn the key to on really quick to power the MS unit and I realized I didn't hear the pump running when I was done. SO I checked it 3 more times. Worked every time. Perhaps it was a sticky relay or something that sorted itself while things ran.
I thought the O2 sensor was boogered by the oil, because I was getting no V reading....but then it came alive after fixing the puking issue.
So really aside from the possible bad alternator and the PCV thing it's coming along.
I did actually move it out of the garage on it's own power though :hick:..first time in a long time that I have't had to push it out.
A couple more quick shots of things on the car.
Got the battery mount done
(http://www.turbochuck.com/images/Tbird/Batt%20mount.JPG)
A pic of the relay board of the MegaSquirt set-up
(http://www.turbochuck.com/images/Tbird/Relay%20board.JPG)
A quick shot of the interior showing where the MS ECU will be mounted under the pass seat.
The oil situation seems better. The blow-by issue is slowly clearing up and there is MUCH less oil smoke out of the tailpipe. Still need to get the breather tank though.
Ive been having PCV/blow by issues myself. You can pick up some decent catchcan setups for rather cheap on ebay, downfall is theyre chrome. If you have access to a bead blaster, and paint it, its not a problem.
I've got my eye on a couple others. The ebay ones all look for shiznit. Probably going to get one ordered tonight or tomorrow.
My plans for today got hyjacked by drama...so not much got done.
I still say that your 83 is one of the best looking cars on the board:D
I'm not sure about all that...but I'll take the compliment anyway :hick:
how much and where did you get the mega squirt from, and how much power are you makin with it
http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html
Do some reading.
I bought my stuff from glensgarage.com, but there are several vendors.
I just got the car running, so I haven't dialed the tune in yet..
Couple more shots.
Here's some updated interior shots. The forward part of the "office" is coming along well. I'm thinking of swapping out the TC door panels, but may just leave them.
and a recent engine pic.
interior looks good. did you attach the latch side of the belts to the tunnel, or the seat tracks?
The latch side are on the seat tracks (stock manual tracks). When I can afford it I'll be getting some harnesses.
I would leave the door panels as is. They look sweet. Never seen them before.
The onll thing I'm not fond of is that they are not overly sturdy. The driver side has a broken mounting hole. Are they used much? I guess I never paid attention to it. The storage nets too cool and are "correct", but not very practical. I dunno, I'll probably just leave them though, esp if I can find a good driver side one.
I have a set of the blank lock switch plates (since I took out the power locks), but of course they are broken too, and I need to figure out a way to stick them on unless I find a good set of those as well.
Velcro™...it works wonders. ;)
Looks great Chuck! We don't need no steeenkin' radio, mang.
whats a radio??
That looks so cool. I love the '83-'84 turbo steering wheel.
looking good, you wouldnt happen to have another set of those armrests laying around would ya?
Chuck, are any of those parts the ones I sold to you?
Eric-
I was actually thinking about the Velcro...just haven't gotten around to it yet. I have a radio for it, but need to run a little more wiring and such before I drop it in. I'm still need to listen closely to all the noises the car is making anyway, so I can wait for a bit on that. Being able to hear the detonation is more critical right now than jamming. :hick:
cougarcragar...yup I love those steering wheels....I have a total of 4 now ;) This one, the one in the XR-7, and two other TC ones (one in desprerate need of a recovering).
turbo88- sorry no more armrests. I was hoping I had one good set, but I'm still in need of an unbroken driver one.
ifixya- I think that console switch plate is the one I got from you and I got manual seat tracks as well correct? Those are under the Recaros.
Yes! That's hot!
I didn't think I sold you the manual tracks. Maybe I did... I dunno.
Stop it Chuck....you're driving me crazy!! :) I'm still taking mine apart, cleaning and making a wanted list!
Nice job...thanks for sharing.
Rod
Be sure to get hold of me if you have any MS issues, Chuck.
The car is looking great!
Well I haven't been able to do more than open the garage door and look at the car since last Sat (the 5th).
Frank, I actually did have an MS issue, but it wasn't terrible. I did not correct my PWM settings for the injectors (You are using resistiors and I have the FB board) so I blew one of the FI power fuses a couple weeks ago. Thought the car had done something terrible and spent alot of time tracing that one down. Last Sat I was able to get out and get some EGO-corrected datalogging done and the stoich zones are doing better. I need to get my crankcase ventilation system hooked up to take care of the smoke issue I'm having from time to time.
