Title: question about my 87 tbird turbo coupe
Post by: snakeskinpanda on May 22, 2006, 02:51:51 PM
I have 87 tbird turbo coupe about 120,000 miles on it.  Recently, my water pump and radiator were leaking.  I went Napa and got parts.  On the way to Napa, my engine died.  I started the engine again, it started but died again.  As long as I put a gas pedal on, it is idling and running.  But when I stop at traffic light or wherever I stop and ease gas pedal off, the engine dies.  This morning, when I started engine, it started but to not keep idling; I have to put my feet on gas pedal to keep running.  Does anyone tell me what causes this problems?  As I read other threads, it seems that IAC valve is clogged or air is leaking somewhere.  Are those possible causes?  But I don't even know where IAC valve is locating or where to check air leaking.  Please help me.  Thank you.
I originally wanted to ask about this question.  I tried to replace water pump and radiator by myself.  A guy at Napa told me that it is easy to do by meself.  But I have no idea how to release the timing belt.  Are there any web sites teach me how to instale water pump and radiator.  Thank you.

Your idle problem sounds like the IAC. I had the same problem when I bought my TC. This is what it looks like...

It's on the throttle body on near the firewall. Take it off and clean it out with some carb cleaner.

Also here's a site with lots of useful info.

BTW I assume you mean the accessory belt and not the timing belt. There is no need to take off the timing belt. There is a tensioner near the alternator with a bolt on it that is keeping the belt tight. Put a breaker bar or long wrench or rachet on the bolt for leverage and push down (or pull up depending on which side your are on) to release the tension. Slide the belt off and there you go.

Oh yeah, welcome to the boards.
