I was curious.... does anyone know how hard it would be to run a stock car type steering shaft in a 84 cougar?? Later on this car will have no interior full cage and aluminum sheetmetal dash... and this car will remain street legal. just curious how hard it would be to run that type of steering shaft into a stock type power steering unit/rack & Pinion.
what are you looking to do? do you want the entire assembly so you can pull off your steering wheel? you can probley do it easy, but where will your horn, cruis control, wipers, ect. go? the column is only held in by like 4 bolts under the dash and one in the steering shaft. if you only want to replace the universal and rag joint with a better shaft, i did it with long tubes in about an hr.
Flaming River makes an aluminum steering shaft with needle bearings that eliminates the rag joint. They are listed for 5.0 Mustangs but will fit our cars also. Keep in mind that these transfer a lot of vibration. ;)

thats the one i used. as i mensioned in another post it realy stiffens up the steering. the car is way more responsive.
yes im talkin about replacing the entire steering column.. i dont have cruise control.. so i can put up with out LOL the rest will be used with toggle switches I will run a quick release splined steering wheel. the car will not be made for much comfort... cept during long races basically lol but even then.....blah @ comfort
YOu will have to fab something up custom for that. Any fox bodied steering colum will work though I do belive. Check out after market mustang parts.
i think im going to go outside n look at the cougar and scratch my ass til i come up with something..... oops i mean my head lol..... now that im finally home... im tired.
