Title: Why are rodents so inexplicably attracted to your HVAC blower?
Post by: Red_LX on May 08, 2006, 12:44:32 PM
I was cleaning out my car yesterday (after it sitting all winter), and I knew I should have put mothballs under it but I didn't...and some mice got up into my blower box :brick: Chewed through that little grate thing over it and made a nest up in there, so I had to spend about 20 minutes pulling all the cardboard and fiber stuff out of there. God I hate that! There was even a dead baby mouse in my passenger side floorboard...at least the rest of them were long gone.

That makes me wonder though, why do rodents always do that? On my dad's old reliant, they made a nest in the blower box and completely blocked it up, and on my Mustang a couple of them got in there too. Doesn't make much sense.

The little vermin just like small dark places, i guess.
I've never had a problem with in my Tbird, but the in the Caprice I have privileges in, they made a hell of a mess in it 2 or 3 times...I always told the grandparents they need to get out more in it :giggle:

I'm looking forward to the same stuff once I tear into the Fairlane. Mice infested the thing at one point and ate out part of the headliner, the sides of the seats and god knows what else. The car has that smell (you probably know what I'm talking about) There's mouse turds on the sill plates and all kinds of grasses and  fell from behind the dash when I pulled the choke. I'm almost afraid of what I'm going to find in that thing.

Yes, I have "that smell" inside my car (I assume it's a urine smell). It's even overpowering the air freshener I got. Guess I'm gonna have to get in there with some febreze...ugh.

Try stuffing steel wool into every opening on your car. Blower motor intake, exhaust pipe, engine air intake. This works as long as you don't plan on starting the car all winter. Mice don't like to chew through steel wool :D  Oh yeah take it out before you start your car.
