Title: Mustang to cougar 8.8 swap?
Post by: bigdaddy62 on May 01, 2006, 04:20:59 PM
Wanting to change the 1987 cougar rearend out to a mustang 8.8 with 3.73 gears. Is this a straight bolt in swap with shorter axles?  What are the known issues with this swap.  What year mustang if it is year specific?  Thanks in advance

Str8 swap w/ shorter axles... AFAIK, all you need to do is transfer your brake lines over.

i have a 8.8 out or a mustang.. it bolts right in and use the same axle that came out of the mustang rear.. only question i have is do you have 9" or 10" rear brakes? if you have 10" stock then keep them over the mustang 9" brakes..

any other questions?

I ran with the 9" 'Stang brakes when I did mine...I didn't feel like changing the backing plates and all, no problems with it.

Problem here lies in the fact that the track on the stang rear is 3/4" shorter on each side.
Dosen't sound like much but i seen a guy that did it and man did it look silly.
If i remember correctly though there is a way to use longer axles, read a thread about it somewhere.

The 85.5 and earlier t-birds and cougs had the same rear width as the Mustang, but 87, yes, would definitely be wider.
