Err me atleast. Well as a couple of you know I well um.. did something to the axle in my car. Well this morning after making the three hour drive to and from school she died. And she died in the driveway. I was pulling up to the garage and this is as far as she made it. Now it just grinds and wizzes in the rear when you try and move. But how is that for faithful? She has never left me sitting! I've always made it home when something broke.
Another reason of why we love these cars so much...
I too broke a caliper which then ripped the front rotor up and damaged the brake line. It broke 10 yards from my house after a trip to a NY car show last year. Somehow they know when they're home. Glad u made it back Claude.
That's funny, you're literrally like less than 100 feet from the garage. What did you do to the axle? And I guess it's a good thing that there are all those birds in teh JY for you to get axles from.
WHat a bummer...at least you got home.
shiznit... my rear end did the same thing, except I was about 20 miles from home at 6:30 on the freeway.

My 1983 Conti got me home on a broken timing chain of all things. About 3 miles. Had to drive in 1st gear at 20mph to keep the car from bucking and choking, but it got me home. Didn't run after that, and sat for 2 years until I figured out that the chain went out.

When the tranny lines on my 80 blew I was able to get home ( with a huge azz plume of white smoke behind me ) Pulled in the driveway and assesed the damage, decided to try and drive to the parts store for more fluid, wouldnt budge foreward or backward. Ended up walking but atleast the car was home.
Another time in the winter it had rained and Everything was black ice, going to a friends house the car didnt make a corner, kept going perfectly straight in to a 4ft snowbank. It went right in up to the doors, couldnt even open them to get out I was thinking I was totally screwed since I was working at sprawlmart at the time and was as usuall flat broke. I tossed it in reverse and she backed right out no problem. Unlike the time a couple days later when I turned in to my driveway and ended up sliding straight in to the middle of the front yard, but it WAS home. A 'good ole boy' in a chevy pickup was by within 5 mins with a tow rope and pulled me right out, never fails.
Sounds like a good motivator for a TC 8.8 ;)

lol but i'm serious if you ever get stuck or breakdown around here a redneck in a pickup (most likely a chebby, sometimes a jacked up mud covered ford) will stop and offer help within minuites, its in the rule book.
One time when I was riding with my parents in the Tbird, we were on a busy road and the alternator died at the top of the hill. Somehow, the car managed to coast down the hill and roll about 2 or 3 football fields down the road to the nearest auto parts store. We have no idea how we were able to coast that far.
These cars love us so much :D
I'm not so sure I believe this about my car... driving today in the rain pulled up to a stop sign and blew a heater hose.
OK I NEED HELP!!! I got the cover off, and the little bolt out. The big pin in the center will not come out!! I know what is wrong now and I need to get that pin out! I tried hammering on it and it still wont budge! PLEASE I gota have her running by monday!
That little bolt is broken, do what you can to try to snake it out and the pin will slide out.
Or you can torch the side of the pin where the bolt is broken in.
The little bolt did come out in two peices, but I was able to use a magnet and get it all out. The pin moves about 1/4 on an inch but it just wont come out!..
You got the bolt out and no part of it broke off right? If the bolt came out ok then the only reason I can think of as to why it isn't comming out is that one of the spider gears got hot before they gave and perhaps one of them "welded" itself to the pin. Do you have a Traction Lock? I've never taken a Traction Lock apart (I had mine installed by a trans and diff shop) but doesn't the "S" spring or something have to come out first? I could be wrong :dunno:
The bolt did come out in two pieces. But the pin moves past the bolt hole, but no further. The pin will twist and move back and forth but it will not come out all the way. I've had this type of rear apart many times before, i'm sure blue84302 can attest to that....
The s clip has to come out after the pin.. it is wraped around the pin.
I'm gona torch the pin out. I'm good with a torch and I think I can do it without hurting anything.... I would hate to switch this rear with anything else that isn't a tc rear. 10" drums, 3:27 trac loc and quad shock brackets....but yes a 7.5.
Oh and the spider gears are what stripped out. The ring and pinion are still meshing like they are new with no slop.
The spider gears likely wore grooves in the pin. I had the same thing happen to my old '88 Cougar. I, too, had to cut the ed thing out...
Well tomorrow morning i'm gona cut it... uhg
