I've recently seen an '83/'84 T-bird that is very clean and apparently has sat in the same spot for a while. The only obvious flaw is a busted driver's window, but at least it is sitting under a roof, so there doesn't appear to be weather damage inside. Anyway, I'm not sure if it's an '83 or '84, but on the front fenders behind the front wheels it has emblems that say "Electronic Fuel Injection". Now if it's an '83, that for sure means it's a 302, right, since the V6's in '83 were still carbed? Could it be an '84 V6 car and still have those badges on the fenders? It's not close by, and I've only looked at it up close once, and then I didn't spend too much time, since it is sitting right out in the middle of town. It might could be obtained fairly cheaply if it has been sitting as long as I suspect. Being a V8 could definitely be a plus, but then again, there's probably a reason it's sat so long. Can anybody identify the year and motor from this description? Thanks.

Sounds like a Turbo Coupe actually. They had a EFI badge like that IIRC.
SSX,
Thanks for the reply. I did see it well enough to know it's not a TC. It's got the base no-info '83/'84 dash with a column shift, whitewall tires with wheel covers, so I know it's a V6 or V8 car. It didn't have any badges for Elan, Fila, or anything like that.

What color are the lenses in the front bumper? White/clear ='83, yellow = 84
My 83 was a 5.0 and had the "Electronic Fuel Injection" badges on the fenders and the trunk.
The turbo cars had "EFI Turbo" badges ...
I believe the EFI badge was on some of the '84s as well... I'd be willing to bet it's a 5.0 car, easy enough to tell with the VIN #.
If it is a badge that say EFI and it is a 83-84 it can only be 2.3turbo. they didn't have EFI on a V8 until 86-87 and V6 88 only in the Fox. I've got an 84 T-bird Turbo coupe and it says Turbo in big letters and EFI in much smaller letters. Also the 83-84 Turbo coupes had the window molding with the ribbs on the door and forward rear window pillar. Also the 83-84 has a flat a dash top. not the sunkin passenger side of the 85-88. Also another thing to look for would be if it had the 3 forked 14.5" wheels "very rare" Also the 83-84 has square turnsignal and wiper swith levers. 83-84 had flat door panels with a arm rest and a door pocket.83-84 would also have the pull style headlight switch. could also have wide 2 ribbed trim. 83-84 also have the tailights that what the square style bird emblem with the revese light in the center of it. On the interior again the plastic dash peices have a pimply texture as the 85-88 has a more random patten. 83-84 grill would be squares not the floating bars.
Wrong en boyo.....
First he said the badges say "Electronic Fuel Injection" not "EFI Turbo"...83-85 V8s got CFI...which is a form of EFI...The 83's had CFI and EEC 3 :yuck:
The 83-84 5.0 CFI cars had the "Electronic Fuel Injection" badges on the fenders and trunk.
He's ID'ed it as an 84-84, with 14" steelies and wire hubcaps...it's not a TC.....but w/o popping the hood or looking at the VIN it's hard to say what engine it has. My bet is a 5.0.
If it has "Electronic Fuel Injection" badges it has to be a 5.0 car. 83 5.0 cars also have "Automatic Overdrive" badges on the trunk lid as well.
It doesn't have to be. I've seen an '84 V6 with "Electronic Fuel Injection" badges.
:dunno: Every "Electronic Fuel Injection" badged Tbird I've seen has been a 5.0 car. Easiest way to tell is to look under the car and see if it's got a double sump oil pan, which means it's a 5.0 .
5.0 would be my bet.
Here is the information I have:
"Automatic Overdrive"
Found on 1983 Cougar/T-Bird 5.0 fenders.
(R/L: E3SZ-6342528-A)
"Electronic Fuel Injection"
Found on 1983 Cougar LS fenders.
(R/L: E3SZ-16098-B)
"EFI Turbo"
Found on 1983-84 Turbo Coupe/1984 XR7 fenders.
(R/L: E3SZ-16098-A)
"LS"
Found on 1983 Cougar LS fenders.
(R/L: E3WY-16098-A)
All 5.0 cars in 1983-84 had the AOD transmission....so they all got the 'Automatic Overdrive' emblems. If the Cougars were also an LS model, 'LS' letters would go above that. 'Electronic Fuel Injection' emblems could be on either V6 or V8 base model cars. Therefore...my bet is that it's a base V6 car.
My old '84 V6 had no emblems on the fenders. The fender emblem thing was only for 1983.
And unless the car had a particularly rare 'talking emblem' option, the emblems can't "say" anything. They're inanimate objects. :flip:
Sounds like an '83, As for the engine... Most likely a 5.0/V8.
I've got an '84 3.8/V6 that claims EFI. :hick:
i want to put in my .02.......my last bird was a 84 efi 5.0....had the auto overdrive badge on back, but had no emblems of any type on the front fenders, and was never painted, and not a special edition of any type( elan, fila, etc) any ideas about that?
wow, i might be able to have the efi badge, but i couldnt live with having "AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE" plastered all over my car. thats like having "VTEC" all over.
yeah, i always thought the automatic overdrive thing was kinda dumb:yuck:
The only emblem my '84 3.8 T-Bird has is "Thunderbird" on the trunk.
How many of these were made? I'd like to get one :flip:
