Title: overhead console
Post by: Master_xzavior on April 24, 2006, 10:11:47 PM
Ok folks I got the moonroof in my tbird so I have the console on the roof with the button and lights in it. anyone found a way to make these look better? Ive actually thought about trying to find a way to put the display in the console sort of like in the dodge stratus where it has the compas and temp on it. Anyone got any ideas on it or has anyone actually done it?

I installed the temp/compass display out of an Explorer in mine, but I don't have a sunroof. The one I got is too long, but I would imagine if you got one for an Explorer with the moonroof it'd probably be a lot shorter and would have the buttons

they made an explorer with a moonroof? I think I saw a picture of the console installed in yours on the forum if there isnt a shorter console in the other one does that one have alot of space that could be removed to shorten it?

Yes, there is actually a lot of space that can be removed, since the electronics are all up front. The rearmost part is just a garage door opener holder (not even good for sunglasses :( ) and the center part is map lights:

As for the Explorer with sunroof, I remember when looking for this console on eBay there were plenty with the sunroof buttons...

Or leave the console as is, and install a compass/temp rear view mirror like this one:

They used to be readily available at the junk yards as the same vendor (gentex) made the same mirror for the big three.

Just an option...

ummm for 180 to 250 ummm no thanks thats a bit more then I want to spend on a mirror or the display idea that mirror does look cool dont get me wrong its just more then I care to toss out on something like that. Now paint it blue and make it so that you can see through all the chicks clothes in it and Id buy it in a heartbeat :D

ok I looked on ebay for an explorer console with a sunroof found quite a few but they look like they arent much shorter then that one. The closest thing Ive found that looks like it'll fit is in a chrysler

The Explorer console with a moonroof is the same size as the one without. Without, there's that garage door opener holder in back; with, the moonroof switch is in that location:

And the moonroof is quite large...very nice option to have. :)

Good so I wasnt seeing things I thought they looked about the same size but wasnt sure as they didnt have any side by side on ebay. Well not exactly good as to my project but good that Im not totally nuts yet lol
Im guessing Im just going to have to find a car with a console that will fit and blend in descent. I would prefer to keep the car all ford as much as possible but seeing as how I didnt see anything on ebay I may have to look at other makes and models

me 180 for a mirror.  I bet it's the auto dimming  that makes it that much, I wish they had one with just compas and temp.  I can go to Fry's Electronics and for 50 bucks more I can buy a mirror with a 3 inch LCD screen in it.

kindof along the same lines as this thread, how hard would it be to put a moon roof in an 84 bird. I think that would be a nice feature.[/hijack]

Actually now that I think about it someone here has a TC that has one out of a Lincoln Continental that I thought was pretty short.  I'll see if I can find the link.

Here we go.

It's pretty badass, and includes the visors too it loks like.

Y'all realize you can get those Gentex mirrors pretty cheap on eBay, just like the overhead consoles. Nobody pays retail for stuff like that :hick: Those mirrors were OEM in many, many GM cars, so you could probably find 'em in junkyards as well.

The console in my car is from a '96 Explorer. If you want to install one you'll also need the amient air temperature sensor, mounted on the rad support. For the record, the sensor out of a GM car will work fine - I used an '00 Blazer sensor in my installation

Thats cool as hell with that console in that TC I wonder exactly what it came out of that almost looks like it would work with a moon roof.
84 tbird the moonroof would be a pain to put in a car without it I would imagine considering youd have to totally cut the roof off one and put it on another and Im not sure exactly on this but mine looks like its molded into the roof pan I could be wrong I havent really looked into it much since mine came with it also I believe the support frame under the headliner is different. Again not totally sure Ive only seen one car before the 87-88 that had the factory one and it was on ebay and they had taken it back to the factory to have one custom installed. If you can find one the same body style with it you could cut the roof off one with a moonroof and weld it onto yours.
Its deffinately a nice option in the summer time:D
not batman I think the console is attached with screws or something from the underneath as soon as I gain up enough courage and free time I'll pull my headliner and look. I just havent had the motivation to do it yet.

...And yet, it's surprisingly accurate. It always displays the temp the radio guys says it is, or that those signs outside some businesses display, within a degree. Granted, if you park the car the temp will be very high when you first start it, but once the fan starts pulling air through the grille the temp gets accurate within a minute
