Title: 87 GT (my first big auto body project)
Post by: crystal on April 22, 2006, 11:12:49 PM
Well, some of you may know that in the fall I went back to school as an auto body major. Well this semester I've been working on this 87 GT as well as my 84 SVO.

While I didn't actually lay any paint on it (I'll be painting most of my SVO, but I don't think I'm ready to spray candy yet) I did a lot of the body work (including a last minute repair on the pass. door cuz some jerkoff kicked it after I had it wet sanded). I did most of the wet sanding, mixed most of the paint, layed the lines for the scoops and did most of the masking and prep work. While it's by no means perfect I don't think it came out half bad for my first big project. Paint took about 10 hours and I put in a good 15 hours from finish work and prep till final clear.

looks like it came out nice. I need to repaint my 88 GT. me and a buddy painted it about 7-8 years ago and the black paint just shows way too much. Where are you going to school. I would really like to get into learning how to paint on my own. I already have some body work under my belt but i cant confidently pick up a gun and start sprayin.

Owens Community College in Perrysburg. Decent program, pretty cheap, I'd recommend it :)

Looks great, I would love to learn how to lay my own paint. I seen you goin down Oregon Rd. the other day while in Big Bertha(Great Lakes Window straight truck). I was wonderin what brought you over in my neck of the woods. You moved into Genoa didnt you, whats that a 35-40min drive to school?

Very nice. I'd love to take an auto body course. That's something I'd like to do when I have spare time.
So how was this car condition wise when you started?

You forget who's driving...try 20 ;)

As for what it looked like before, hmm:

It was pretty straight, fixed a lot of small dents and dings and a big repair on the lower drivers door where someone kicked it in after it was already prepped. The hatch repair was probably the worst since it looked like the attached pic beforehand. It was a 2 part metal patch. My SVO has a lot more in metal work... a good 7 patches and then the filler work over them.
