Anyone have an ipod with Apple's dock (no other brand)? Its just slightly bigger than the bracket for the center console ashtray lid, but I'd like to mount it there on the lower side...it'd fit and look perfect. Just looking for ideas, while keeping the lid functional. Of course, the ash tray itself would be permanently removed.
If I can, I'll try to get pictures later today or Sunday.
Yeah that's pretty much the same thing i'm doing. however i'm mounting mine flush with the top and completely removing the lid.. so the ipod can slip in and out with no hassles
I'm doing the same thing...haven't really found a perfect solution for it yet though. What I made last summer didn't hold up well. I do have to come up with something soon though. Maybe we should collaborate. ;)
I'll take take some pictures of what I have rigged up so far and how I had the griffin powermate in there to help out as a guide.
Alex...we don't want pictures of you playing with your . This is a family oriented site. ;)
Alright Fair enough i'll just keep my methods to myself then ;)
No pix for you!
Glad I'm not the only one. Thinking about it, the base should be able to swivel also. Guess pictures aren't needed ;)
Meh, I don't need no stinken Ipod..

Very killer dude.
thanks, it ain't perfect but i'm happy with it.
Yo bro that looks great!! Good job... I like the console plate for the controls too..
Wait, so is your Carputer gone? Looks good man. One question... Why a Nano??
Yes carputer is gone. THe battery kept draining so until i figure out better solutions i'll stick wiht the nano.. and why nano? I don't like big bulky things such as the regular iPod, too big for my taste.
I could personally care less about the fact that the regular iPods now play video and hold insane amounts, that's not what I need it for. the Nano is nice and slick and perfect for what i need it for. And when i put it in my pocket, Sometimes I forget it's even there. that's why I got it.
Yeah, slick always seemed to be your style, so I guess it does make sense. I have a lot of music that I regularly listen to so a 30 gig was pretty much a requirement. I agree though that the fact that it plays videos is pretty much useless to me.
I love my 4 gig Nano. Anyway to do this through the factory radio? I know the FM transmitter, but I'm wanting to keep it stock while I can. Probably the most worthless question.
No i have a panasonic deck and hte harmon/kardon is wired to it and the nano with the dock is wired to the harmon/kardon therefore there is no FM transmitting happening.
Well what I meant is that is my only option pretty much. I cant exactly wire an Ipod into the factory radio. I do like it though. Is yours the 2 or 4 gig?
Mine is the 2gig, i bought it around christmas time because i needed an mp3 player to use for the new year's resolution of starting to go to the gym (which i'm still doing to this day), and they were all sold out of the 4gigs everywhere so I settled for 2.
Thats the opposite of here. Everyone was sold out of 2 gigs. So a little more money was spent. It was worth it yes. I need to start lifting, but I just enrolled in College, I'm a little behind. I love your car though. Now I know at least an option to mounting this in my car. Is that by your steering column like a remote?
yeah, it control's the Nano, and hte monitor displays the songs and when you're browsing and stuff.. its pretty neat.
OK, here are my totally uninspiring iPod dock install photos:
Lid closed. I know, it's crooked...long story (below).

What have we here?

In use...

The dock is mounted on some 1"x2" pieces of wood. I stapled (pu$$y side) Velcro™ on the wood and stuck (d!ck side) on the bottom of the dock. It's not moving around at all. The line level out from the dock is connected to a 1/8" stereo mini cable, that plugs into the AUX on the deck via RCA jacks. I have a charger hooked up to the dock connector on the dock; it's in the console and can be turned on or off when needed. Everything works great.
Oh, I did have to grind down the hinges on the console lid to get the dock to fit. That's why the lid is crooked, actually. The heat from the cutting wheel on the Dremel™ transferred heat over to the area where the pop rivets hold the lid to the console panel. That melted the ABS plastic and the lid popped out on one side. I have a plastic welder and did my best to melt myself a solid mounting spot for the new pop rivet but obviously it's a little off LOL. Soon as I find another decent 1983-84 console panel I'll redo it.
But why is the iPod in crooked? Lol nice creative descriptions for velcro too. Man your control panel is totally blinged out, I've never seen it before. Was the joystick standard for mirror control on the 83-84's?
The iPod is in crooked because the carpeting underneath the console isn't behaving well. If I shim up the wood to make the dock level, then the lid won't close properly. I'm going on a road trip this weekend and will evaluate the whole thing, then make adjustments if necessary when I get back...maybe cutting carpeting, who knows.
The 1983-84 console panel had the joystick for the power mirrors, yes. And it was on the right side of the panel, with the power window switch on the left. In 1985 the mirror switch was on the left and was the flat style, while the power window switch moved to the right. There is also a very deep grain in the 1983-84 panels. I sanded it down, then put a 1985-88 ash tray lid on. Had I been able to find the flat-style mirror switch in chrome, then I'd have used the later panel. No biggie, I like it the way it is. Thanks for the comments.
I have one of the video iPods, and have never seen the backs of the newest docks. Do they plug in using the regular proprietary plug on the bottom of the iPod, as well as having an 1/8 inch jack? So would it be plausible to run an iPod through the dock using a iPod interface for say an Eclipse Audio head unit? In other words I'd consider doing the same thing if I could dock the pod then run it regularly using my deck.
According to the video iPod specs here (http://"http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html"), the standard dock has the dock connector and a 3.5-mm stereo headphone minijack, just like previous iPods. There is also a new, optional iPod Universal Dock (http://"http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=MA045G/A") with dock connector, audio and composite video output, and S-video output, and it also works with the new Apple Remote (http://"http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=MA128G/A") if you're so inclined. That's more for hooking the iPod up to a TV for a slideshow or video playback.
The only problem with the video iPod (5G) is that it's too wide to fit in the ash tray on the console. I was going to get one but then figured this out quickly. I don't think there is a way to safely widen the hole in the ash tray area to make it fit. Even my 3G iPod is a close call, side-to-side. The dock is also correspondingly wider.
Eric- I should have a spare full option console like what you have. I can check to make sure it's all there and not broken.
Thanks Chuck, let me know. Options don't matter...the aluminum part I make from scratch.
Yeah, I guess it doesn't matter since the bones of them are all the same. I know I have 2-3 of them. I'll look them over and see if they are unbroken and get back with you.
