Title: Need Part- "brake proportionating valve"?
Post by: newschoolr on April 20, 2006, 07:23:44 PM
If the name seems made up, tell me so I can fire my mechanic. He tells me he is looking for a used one because Ford discontinued manufacturing them.

Can anyone help?!

No that name is correct.  It is the little brass thing that is mounted on your drivers side strut tower, under the master cylinder.  Where are you, I have one here.  I would only ask $20+shipping.

Not b/s.  Such a thing does exist.  Of course we cannot tell it your proportioning valve is broken or not.  What lead you to take it to the mechanic for replacement?  A broken prop. valve would cause very poor breaking performance.

$20, is probably a good deal as I doubt they are avaliable new anymore from FORD.
Title: BPV for 88 Cougar LS
Post by: newschoolr on April 20, 2006, 11:47:15 PM
...I took my cougar out of storage and the brake light was on. I decided to have my mechanic give it the once over, and that is what was discovered.

Like I mentioned to 1Wild Bird, I'd love to invest some money into this low mileage, well kept roadster, but I am worried about not finding parts if things required to be replaced....case in point, me looking for a BPV!

Who is a reliable source for parts for 88 Cougars?

..novel idea! :-) I was thinking more along the lines of a Ford-specific shop/dealer, but I will give this recommended site a try.

Thanks.

alot of parts are used on several cars, http://www.coolcats.net has a listing of shared parts so some other resto parts dealers may carry them.

if you brake warning light is on try replacing it first( screws into the top middle port in the prop valve).

I know that most parts stores won't sell that part because of the liablity involed. Your best bet would be a salvage yard. Good luck. Another thing to check is if you are low on brake fluid that brake light will come on beacuse there is a differcne in pressure between the front and rear.
