When i was under my dash finishing up the routing of the wires on my buttstuffog cluster swap i noticed that one of the 2 wires feeding the brake light switch was pretty fried, it was all black and burnt right where it plugs in. Has anyone else noticed this before? Besides a used switch at the wreckers is there a source for a new one that anyone is aware of?
Hmm never heard of that one. I don't know if the dealer still has 'em or not. If not you should be able to get one that works at the wreakers. The don't usually go bad that often.
Actually, it's a fairly common problem. The wires attached to the connector bend back and forth every time you step on the brake pedal, and after several years of use they start to break, strand by strand. Once it gets down to one or two strands it's too thin to carry the current, so it gets hot and burns the insulation. Eventually it'll break right off and you'll have no brake lights.
There's likely nothing wrong with your switch, it's the wiring harness you need. I made one up myself when mine went
I had a brake light switch that was sticking closed. So the switch would heat up and would stay on for hours. It did burn my connector and wire up like yours.
Just cut off that burnt connector, get a new switch just to be sure (5bux) and get two of them crimping spade connector guys and plug them directly into the switch.
I've had it like that for 8-9 years now no problems
